About Jonathan Olds
I graduated from Colorado State University in May 2021 with a Bachelor's degree in Statistics, as well as minors in Sports Management, Business Administration, and Mathematics. I've been passionate about sports ever since I was old enough to ask my grandpa to record basketball games on VHS tapes. This passion initially fueled me towards journalism, as I served as co-editor of the sports section of my high school newspaper for three years. I also created and ran a Colorado Rockies fan page on Instagram with 5,000 followers from June 2016 to May 2019. Eventually, my analytical mindset and mathematical skills won out and I decided to pursue my passion for sports through the quantitative field of statistics. I am still exhilarated by stories, and I think there is nothing more exciting than using data and analytical processes to share relevant sports stories and predictions. I have practiced this craft in my undergraduate years, completing two lengthy analytical projects related to college basketball and baseball. The final reports to these projects can be found in my Featured section. Armed with my well-rounded educational background in statistics, mathematics, business, and sports management, I am excited to find a position where I can find and use data to create relevant stories, predictions, and strategies. When I'm not obsessing over the weird facts on football, baseball, and basketball broadcasts, I can be found playing volleyball, pickleball, and ultimate frisbee, reading, playing board games, and listening to an increasingly wide range of music.

Statistics Office Assistant
I interviewed for the opening in the statistics front office during my sophomore year at CSU. I was awarded the job and was excited to have an opportunity to create relationships with the statistics faculty and to build practical job skills in an office setting. My familiarity with Microsoft Office and basic statistical concepts allowed me to jump right in and assist various faculty members with data collection and cleaning for statistical projects by faculty/graduate students. In addition, I am a quick learner so I was swiftly given various office responsibilities, including filing purchase receipts into the online accounting system, scanning and sending graded exams to online students, and maintaining the inventory of office supplies.I've been able to maintain high performance in my tasks while taking on full courseloads and adjusting to the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the past two and a half years in this position, I have refined my attention to detail and efficiency in repetitive tasks. I have also been able to build relationships with a notable number of professors and graduate students in the statistics department. Several of these faculty members attended my honors thesis presentation last fall. I quit this position upon graduation from CSU in May 2021 to seek full-time employment.
Sports Analytics Intern
I was able to secure an internship with the CSU Sports Analytics Group in summer 2020 through my relationship with assistant professor Bailey Fosdick, the founder of the program. The program, which began in 2019, allows undergraduate students interested in sports analytics to pursue research projects under guidance from professors and graduate students. In the summer of 2020, I was selected with four other students. Each of us were given the chance to pursue answering our own research question. I have always been intrigued by the selection process of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, a.ka. March Madness. Specifically, there is a committe made up of athletic directors and conference commissioners who select 36 teams, in addition to the 32 teams who earn a place in the tournament by winning their conference tournamnt, based on a variety of factors, and rank them from 1-68. I wanted to try to replicate this process to gain a greater insight as to what these factors are that are important to the committee for selecting and ranking teams. Through guidance from Bailey and a graduate student, I utilized a LASSO penalized logistic regression model which ultimately selected 130 out of 144 teams correctly in the five year period from 2014-2019 and ranked 271 out of 340 teams within one rank of their true rank over the same period. This was my first extended research project and it was invaluable in many ways. I greatly expanded my data scraping and cleaning skills as I had to make my own dataset that I would analyze for the first time. I also learned how to apply an analytical process in a more involved way than I had learned in any class prior. Finally, I enhanced my presentation skills through weekly video presentations to my fellow interns and supervisor.
Analytics Intern
I began working as an unpaid intern for the Poudre School District Athletics Program after meeting PSD's athletic director, Russ Mckinstry, following his guest lecture in one of my sports management classes. There was a need for the district to have a document that could concisely summarize the athletic program's impact on the Fort Collins community for use in negotiations with potential sponsors. My familiarity with large datasets, R programming skills, and design skills in Microsoft office allowed me to immediately begin this project.Poudre School District manages 31 elementary schools, 9 comprehensive middle schools, and 4 comprehensive high schools in Northern Colorado with a total student enrollment of approximately 30,000. Across the 13 middle schools and high schools, the district attracts about 4,500 student-athletes in 18 sports. I was able to work for six weeks with the department before the project was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In those two months, I was able to gather a considerable amount of relevant numbers and figures and had started on rough draft of the brochure containing this information.
