About Jonathan Rainer
I’m a software engineer, passionate about solving problems that help people achieve their goals. Over the last few years I’ve worked with Kubernetes, Docker, Java, Python, Rust and many other technologies to enable Cloud-based transformations, and this has brought enhanced productivity, decreased costs and I’ve learned more than I could ever have thought possible. I’ve been a geek for as long as I can remember, taking apart my family’s computer with screwdrivers before I even knew what any of it did, much to my parents chagrin. Throughout my University career I became increasingly interested in embedded systems, completing my Masters project on Bit-Serial Processors, and following that with a PhD on optimising Data Caches. In recent years I’ve moved towards working on Full-Stack Development of Kubernetes Operators as well as CI/CD and release pipelines. My skills lie in an understand of the whole engineering stack that I work with, right from networking and infrastructure provisioning through to writing services that deploy atop that infrastructure. I’ve developed this understanding over multiple years so I can work comfortably at almost any level of the technology stack, from signal traces to designing models that build software. I’m also dedicated, consistent, reliable and knowledgable, being the person that many other teams will come to due to my reputation for getting things done and doing them well.My proudest achievement was the completion of my PhD in 2021. Not only did I complete my PhD in lockdown due to Coronavirus but I also had to work while writing up. Not only was my PhD a personal triumph but I also saw it as a vindication of my beliefs about full-stack engineering. It demonstrated that to get the best outcomes in a project you have to understand and optimise all levels of the stack. It emphasises that breadth is preferable to depth, vindicated by the comments of my external examiner and my success in full-stack development in later years. I’m proud of my PhD not only because it shows commitment, dedication and consistency but because it feels like the most authentic representation of my values where software development is concerned.Beyond my professional life I love cooking and baking, always trying to make something new, much to my wife’s delight as she gets to enjoy the results. I’m an avid cinema-goer and TV fan, enjoying everything from The Wire to the latest J-Dramas. I also enjoy running and have a few side coding projects including work on the aws-efs-csi-driver in Go and a slow attempt to build an NES emulator in Rust.

Platform Engineer
Working in the Data Platform Team at Monzo, I played a pivotal role in spearheading the development of cutting-edge tools aimed at enabling our teams to access data swiftly, securely, and with utmost efficiency. This involved the managing of a substantial Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Data Platform, including BigQuery, Airflow on GKE, AI Platform, and Cloud Functions.Furthermore, I actively contributed to our technical ecosystem by crafting multiple Go services and efficiently managing the Data Retention workstream. In this capacity, I adeptly coordinated the efforts of diverse technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring the successful execution of critical projects. In addition to my technical responsibilities, I dedicated myself to the professional and engineering development of our junior team members. I personally designed and implemented a structured mentoring program, which played a significant role in nurturing their growth and skill advancement.I also had the privilege of representing Monzo on the international stage at conferences, with a notable appearance at the Airflow Summit 2023, talking about the innovations in our Data Platform, and how we built tools around Airflow to give our engineers more insight into their Data Models as they execute.
Software Engineer
After promotion my team's priorities shifted from focus on our core product to focussing on large scale verification. Every release cycle we run processes that require over 400 large VMs to run for multiple days to verify our software is safe to ship. We inherited this process from our tech-ops team and instantly set about optimising it, reducing the runtime to under a day for even our largest data-centres, a 65% reduction. Not content with that though we are in the process of redesigning the infrastructure platform, turning it into a series of operators that run atop Kubernetes, and this will help to reduce costs and increase speed even more, removing a huge drag on our release process.Other responsibilities included tooling for test data management and automation, which was so successful it was adopted company-wide, and work to redefine our release process with modern tools and modern timescales. The aim is to reduce the cycle time from 3 months to every few weeks and though this project is fairly new we're making very good progress towards that goal.
Associate Software Engineer
I joined Anaplan during the last year of my PhD and was instrumental in the company launching GCP and AWS single tenant installations. I worked mostly on enabling metrics collection for our core product in SignalFX as well, writing Smoke Test suites, creating a release process for our cloud installations and working improving our team's CI/CD posture, adopting tools like Jenkins and Harness.I also worked on containerising our core application, a monolithic JVM application, and deploying it into Kubernetes. This process, while difficult, opened my eyes to the capabilities of Kubernetes as a platform for deployment in the Cloud and this me forward into other projects and promotion in November 2020.
Workload Model Software Engineer
After working as the Website Editor for Theatre, Film & Television I transferred across to work on another important project. In the department modelling the workload for staff for the coming academic year is very important to ensure that there is an equitable split of Teaching, Research, Administration & Academic Citizenship. The system that was in place for managing this was very cumbersome to use and, as it was hosted in a single Excel document, was difficult for multiple users to edit and frequently broke. I was bought on to transfer this system into a new Google Sheets environment using App Script so that multiple members of staff could operate it at once and that the system was more robust overall. The project was so successful that the department are now able to model next year's workload to keep pace with the demands of the timetabling office and the project is being rolled out to other departments using a similar system.
Lab Demonstrator (Multiple Modules)
During my time as a PhD student I've worked in multiple teaching capacities for the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Theatre, Film & Television. This has included laboratory demonstrating, teaching seminars for small groups and running small tutorials related to homework problems the students had completed. I have also worked in the more administrative side of teaching including marking formative and summative exams and essays across multiple modules.
Theatre Film & Television Website Editor
As website editor for the Department of Theatre, Film & Television I worked on several smaller projects to bring the website more into line with what was required by the department. The first of these was a project to reform the pages on the website that showcased Research and this involved talking to stakeholders and amassing text, image and other media assets to be showcased. This launched successfully and was very well received by the committee that requested the work. I also worked on the day to day maintenance of the website and contributed to several discussions about how we could push the online presence of the department further with a website to showcase students work and an image archive that could showcase some of the incredible productions in the department.
College Welfare Tutor
As a college tutor I acted as a first point of contact for students who had problems of any kind. I also helped and took the lead in organising many college events including events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the college. In addition we are also responsible for signposting students to other specialist agencies when they were better served to assist students to help themselves out of their problems rather than letting us do it for them.
Software Developer
Through my involvement with volunteering teams at summer festivals I’ve undertaken programming projects in order to increase the efficiency and ease of various tasks. The most recent is a Java based project that automated the fulfilment of orders of MP3 files at the Greenbelt Festival. Through this I learned something about how software development in the real world occurs, as it was a collaborative project with other programmers across the country. As a result I’ve learned how to use GitHub to co-ordinate all of this, as well as applying principles seen in the Programming modules of my degree and other elements of Java and SQL that I learned through extra curricular work.
Summer Placement Student
During my time at ETAS I worked on a piece of software that would create call graphs of automotive software from compiled binary files with no source code access. In order to do this I had to learn several ISAs including the Tricore and PowerPC architectures and then map their instructions to a virtual instruction set so the call graph could be created. This was the first step in a larger project intended to estimate maximum stack requirements from annotated call graphs and went on long after I had left the company in one form or another.
Student Ambassador
Worked as part of a team of Student Ambassadors who were all responsible for protraying the best of York University to schools and prospective students and parents. Also worked with the widening participation scheme to encourage more young people to be excited about going to University.
Software Test Development Intern
Whilst working at BlackBerry I was the sole developer working on the CPARS (Call Performance Analysis & Reporting System) project. The project involved large amounts of data (2.5 million data points a week) about test calls made by a wide array of mobile devices. This data was then analysed, to try and discover the causes of the drops and decrease their frequency overall. I extended the existing system to include a lot more automated analysis (including analysis of data clusters), optimised the database and integrated the tool more completely with the existing BlackBerry toolchain. I also worked on a project to create an application for cataloguing and searching messages contained within the S.I.Bs (System Information Blocks) sent over the 3G network. These S.I.Bs contain information about individual network setups and topologies and was used by various teams to look for potential stack optimisations and long term trends in topologies.
Sales Assistant
During my first year of Sixth Form I worked for CEX working particularly those customers who wanted to purchase iPods, Mobile Phones or other more expensive gadgets, by both demonstrating the products to them and answering their questions. This required excellent communication skills, as a potential sale could quickly turn sour if something was misunderstood. It alsorequired tact and diplomacy, as being in a forward facing role, I often had to deal with customer complaints first.
