About Jonathan Stead

I enable higher education and charitable organisations to develop strategic communication and relationship building programs that energise multiple stakeholders around a community building agenda. - As Special Projects Consultant at South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) I’ve championed funding bids for 3 project teams in 12 months.- As Director of Marketing & Communications at SAIIA I ensured the Institute maximised its voice and reach internationally.- As Head of Communications at University of Johannesburg I supported the institution to achieve its marketing aims.In 2016 I relocated to Bath from South Africa. I’m now looking for organisations and projects in the education and charity sector where I can contribute strategically and operationally to help them engage and develop their community presence and contribution, for example to:- Develop Alumni programs to reconnect with ex-students to support current students and the institution goals.- Enhance donor engagement and community visibility for charities and not-for-profit organisations.- Gain support for new projects such as youth work, research or buildings. People value my skills in: - Marketing & Communications – to advise strategically and deliver operationally.- Higher Education and third sector – to develop and communicate the culture of long established and start-up organisations.- Gaining support for projects – from patrons to funding, as third sector organisations need to be financially sustainable. My underlying mission is to help all people get a good education whatever their background. This motivated my work with youth and education in South Africa, such as setting up Unitech (now Marketing, Advancement and Communication in Higher Education). If you, or someone you know, would like to discuss the contribution that strategic and genuine two-way communications can make to build communities then please get in touch via jonathanstead20@gmail.com.

Former Chairman And Now Life Member

Mace – Marketing Advancement And Communication In Higher Education (Was Unitech)

I helped to set up this organisation in the late 1980s and to raise its profile in order to acquire external funding. As a result of a Ford Foundation grant I was able to visit leading universities in the US to study their alumni relations, fundraising and marketing activities. I acted as Chairman in the early 1990s and served on its Board for many years until being made a Life Member. The aims of the organisation were/are to:• Attract more young black people into the marketing and communications profession.• Persuade university vice-chancellors to see the value of the MACE professionals on their staff.• Upskill people in the marketing and communications profession with relevant content and presentation skills.

Consultant

Bath, United Kingdom

During this period I have assisted the Institute initially in fundraising for the youth development programme, and more recently on a project to raise the profile and financial support of the organisation in the UK.

Head Of Special Projects And Strategic Partnerships

South Africa

Having handed over the role of Director of Marketing and Communications I was retained by SAIIA as a consultant to undertake special projects. My main projects during 2015/2016 included:Africa Portal – www.africaportal.org• I co-ordinated, together our with Canadian partners, the Africa Portal project from concept to operational delivery and growth. • The www.africaportal.org website is an open access resource that brings together a community of 70 think tanks and provides their content free, with over 5,000 documents online, indexed and catalogued. This project is currently endorsed by the OECD, key foreign ministries and leading global think tanks. The project has been funded by a Canadian benefactor and has a staff of 5 people.• As the Africa project champion my role included identifying, approaching and on-boarding the content contributors, co-ordinating the delivery platform, and promoting the facility to organisations who will find the content valuable. I was able to provide the inter-connectivity between the think-tank environment, its funders and the local and global organisations that drive research needs. • I have made presentations and run workshops on the Portal at the OECD in Paris, the State Department in Washington DC, the European External Action Service in Brussels and the African Union in Addis Ababa, amongst others. I have also sat on panel discussions and presented at conferences in London, Istanbul, Toronto and Addis. Youth Outreach Project• I have assisted the Youth Outreach Project with strategic advice on fundraising and stakeholder relations. • This programme reaches some 6500 school learners and university students and is designed to build leadership through skills development and content knowledge on key international issues. • I identified potential funders and supported proposal development for 3 successful grant applications.

Jul 2015 - Apr 2016

Director Of Marketing And Communication

South Africa

I joined the staff team to run the marketing and communications department in 2006 having been involved with SAIIA since the 1980’s, first as a member, then as branch chairman, and finally as a member of the Council and its executive. To provide some context, there is a critical need in Africa for quality independent policy research that can assist national governments and multilateral organisations. Unfortunately in the developing world there are many issues that prevent cutting edge new research from reaching its target market. At SAIIA I brought together all market-facing activities and built a multi-disciplinary team that was able to develop a strategic communication plan for the institution. SAIIA has been recognised in the University of Pennsylvania’s annual Global Think Tank survey where it was ranked leading think tank in sub-Saharan Africa by its global peers for 5 successive years. I’m pleased and proud of the contribution of my team towards achieving this recognition and for the impact it has had on public servants, executives and the communities affected by decisions taken on the back of this research.Initially I had responsibility for 2 functions and 1.5 FTE staff but over a period of 5 years was asked to take on responsibility for more areas until all marketing and communications interfaces of the institute went through me. The department resource to support this had grown to 14 people. Our remit included membership, events, media, website, publications, youth development, library and branches.

Nov 2006 - Jun 2015

Head Of Communications

Johannesburg Area, South Africa

I was head-hunted into this role, initially to co-ordinate communications of a polytechnic but was gradually given further responsibility for fundraising, alumni relations, committee administration and the library. When this institution merged with an academic university to create the new University of Johannesburg with 18 000 students I was asked to co-chair the branding and marketing committees. I then took over as Interim Director of Marketing and Communication after the merger with a staff of over a hundred on 5 university campuses.
