It is a 42 month programme, consisting of 21 different manufacturing technology projects ranging from Additive Layer Manufacture, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, single crystal casting, novel welding to machining new materials. The £60m geared funded programme (through the Aerospace Technology Institute and Innovate UK) is made up of £30m R&T gross and £30m implementation costs (Capital etc) and returns up to £250m benefits in improved Manufacturing capability over ten years. I lead the team of 21 Project Leads from across the Civil Aerospace business and our Research Partners AMRC, MTC, AFRC, Birmingham, Nottingham, Glasgow and Cambridge Universities. Show less

I led the way on Concept Design for Manufacture, Innovation, Concurrent Product Development and cost reduction for aero engines going into service from 5 to 25 years in the future. I initiated and led a major improvement programme on Concurrent Product Development, this had a direct impact on winning new engine campaigns by getting different functions to work effectively together. I led a Concept Design Architecting Team (CDAT) driving DfM cost reduction for a new single aisle aircraft engine. I was the Chief Manufacturing Engineer for our UltraFan Demonstrator and worked on the first production UltraFan engine campaigns, mainly on driving engine cost reduction and capability research & development to meet the business case. I was the supply chain technical leader in the business (1500 employees, £100m annual purchase spend), responsible for quality problem resolution, supplier development and technical management of the supplier base during the Trent 1000 and Trent XWB engine development programmes. I set up and led the supplier development and manufacturing engineering team within the new Fans business, with direct reports based across three sites. Highlights included technically leading the first composite Fan Case for the XWB engine, this has one of the lowest rates of non-conformance in the company, driving built in quality into the Trent 1000 Fan system and solving a major Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) lift fan blade forging and machining quality problem. I was responsible for quality, safety, airworthiness in Nacelles and Externals (250 employees, £350m annual purchase spend), and, in the case of the Nacelle, directly to our Airbus and Boeing customers. I was instrumental in developing and implementing a new Rolls-Royce Quality System across 40,000 Rolls-Royce employees Worldwide and led on the Component definition procedures. Specifically, I was responsible and led the team that introduced New Product Introduction Component proving, a two stage First Article Inspection process (FAIR) and a stage gate process for manufacturing source change control.

- Working on Superplastic forming and fabrications technologies, including Finite Element (FE) process modelling.- Seconded to Rolls Laval Heat Exchangers Ltd (joint venture with Swedish company), working on process development of a new high-pressure oil and gas rig heat exchanger and troubleshooting their manufacturing problems.- Working on expert systems for Computer Aided Design (CAD) and manufacturing engineering applications.
