I founded Limpet Technology to commercialise the unique technology that we had developed to use pressure senors and optimised, control loop, feedback algorithms to accurately control motor and other systems to drive the world's first electro-mechanical, automated height safety systems for use in the wind turbine and marine transfer sectors.As well as developing the safest and most cost effective safety system of its type, I was responsible for developing and writing the EU safety test standard and methodology for equipment of this type as, until that time, this approach to personal height safety was completely new.Although the devices lent themselves naturally to protecting the safety of personnel working in and escaping wind turbines, the technology was used in a range of other industries from theater and event/concert rigging, to general rope access and height safety, to other large industrial applications.The technology, at the time, was completely unique and ground breaking and continues to this day to be without equal. The completion of the design of the system was a complex process not just in the accuracy of the control system but also the competing issues associated with meeting the very high load capacity required for a critical, man-safe system whilst keeping the system compact enough to transport, cost effective, 100% reliable and meeting all of the tolerance and IP rating requirements in a package capable of being used in the most extreme industrial environments.The role involved designing the product, assembling a specialised engineering design team, developing the EU certification, certifying the product for industrial use, developing a commercialisation strategy and developing a team to successfully sell and service the product.
