I am a freelance writer and researcher. In 2024 I am commissioned by the Waitangi Tribunal to write a report on the experience of Māori under the RMA in the Porirua ki Manawatu district. I am also working on projects for Bridget Williams Books, the Ministry of Defence, and Crown Forestry Rental Trust.For myself, I’m currently writing a history of New Zealand lakes. I’m also working on a biography of the scientist John Darby. My lakes work combines substantive archival research with fieldwork and interviews with people living around and working with lakes - iwi, farmers, scientists, activists, policy makers and politicians. Previously I was a Manager at Te Arawhiti - The Office for Maori Crown Relations. Most recently I managed the Te Kahui Whakamana ((Settlement Commitments) that works to safeguard the Crown’s commitments made to iwi Maori in the course of Treaty settlements and to build on the relationships forged through settlement. I also managed Ngāpuhi negotiations, Takutai Moana, and Historian teams at Te Arawhiti, and worked as a Senior Analyst at The Office of Treaty Settlements. Before this I was a Manager and Team Leader of Report Writing at the Waitangi Tribunal, having begun there as a Historian. My time at the University of Otago included work as a lecturer, researcher, and tutor. In my work I look to engage with the institutions and forces that have shaped the people and landscapes of New Zealand - and what may do so in the future. I have a wide range of skills: I'm a good people and project manager, I've controlled some big research budgets and programmes, and I am a highly skilled writer and researcher - my book on the Otago Peninsula won the W.H. Oliver Prize for best book of New Zealand history and was shortlisted for the Ockham New Zealand book awards for illustrated non-fiction.
