Bt Freeview Migration ProjectBt Group Apr 2024 - PresentBt TowerMigrated the 110 Freeview transmitter sites from legacy BT equipment to the new equipment supported by BT’s Vena system. My responsibilities included leading teams of BT and Arqiva engineers through each site migration using the strategies I had defined, identifying and troubleshooting issues before the day of migration and fixing any technical issues that arose during a migration. I was required to visit a number of transmitter sites to install and commission equipment and to prove my migration strategies. I also worked with the project manager to update and refine the migration plan as the project evolved. -
Senior Media Edge Design EngineerBt Nov 2018 - Mar 2024Bt TowerWorking as part of the Media Edge team on the Vena project to refresh BT’s UK media network. Assisted with vendor selection, and then tested the system in order to fully understand the product functionality allowing me to define the service architecture and configurations for carriage of ASI and SDI services across the Vena network. Planned and executed manual and automated assurance tests ranging from module tests to full end to end tests to validate the product would meet BT’s service level agreements. Designed a scalable generic physical build that is used at all Vena customer sites regardless of service requirements. Worked with the development team creating the Vena management system to automate service management and monitoring.Worked as part of the core team for migrating BT's Freeview services to the new Vena system. Gathered the requirements for the 110 Freeview customer sites as well as the different ASI service types. Designed and ran end to end proof of concept tests to assure the new system and the downstream hand offs to third party equipment. Helped define the overall migration plan and wrote the strategies for physically migrating each of the transmitter sites, that will form the engineers' workflow when each site is migrated. -

Lead DesignerSky Oct 2017 - Nov 2018London, United KingdomLead designer on project to move production of Sky's programmes for F1 Race Weekends from the OBs to Sky Studios in Osterley. The design includes support for multiple additional diverse IP feeds from the site to Sky's MCR. A hybrid system using both baseband video routing and uncompressed video over IP is used to manage the feeds within Sky. An existing HD gallery was upgraded to be Sky's first fully functional UHD gallery allowing simulcasts of both HD and UHD productions with the gallery working in either HD or UHD. An existing UHD encoder based headend was upgraded to include Dolby encoding and automated monitoring with alarms. -
Design EngineerSky Oct 2015 - Sep 2017London, United KingdomI joined at the beginning of the project that would migrate Sky News to a new Newsroom as well as introduce a new NRCS, MAM and playout automation systems.I analysed some of the existing systems and operations to gather requirements and wrote RFPs. I was tasked with designing Graphics and Sky News Radio. The original intention was for the project to "lift and shift" the existing Chyron and VizRT graphics systems, however my analysis work quickly proved that this would not be possible. Working closely with Graphics Design, Graphics Support and VizRT, I produced the high level and low level design for a new VizRT only system including backend systems, playout engines, auxiliary control and data providers and storage, as well as the design and development environment. All of this would be built new using the latest VizRT software. The graphics system needed to integrate with the new NRCS, MAM and playout automation systems. As well as defining the requirements and workflow for the interfaces I helped create a "Proof of Concept" (POC) system to allow the interfaces to be tested. I wrote the test plan to prove the interfaces on the POC system.Sky News Radio (SNR) creates news bulletins for SNR and IRN. From a project perspective it was a migration and upgrade of the existing system. I worked closely with the Radio Technician to produce the high level and low level design for the analogue, digital and AoIP routing, the audio asset management system, radio studios, newsroom desks and delivery of bulletins to SNR and IRN.Part of the design for both areas included working with Network Design and IT Security to migrate the existing flat network design with internet access and connectivity to third parties, to a more modern and secure network design but without losing any of the required functionality. I helped finish the design and commissioning of a SMPTE 2022-7 video over IP router for News MCR, as well as managing the News MCR’s migration to Sky Studios. -
Technical Business AnalystNews Uk Jan 2015 - Sep 2015London, United KingdomContracted to work on News UK's Video Refresh project replacing existing Apple based systems with Adobe CS and a MAM as well as accompanying hardware. Met with the video editors and support staff to develop a detailed knowledge of the existing workflows and system volumes to build a list of requirements for the storage and the MAM. Based on these I wrote RFPs for the MAM and the storage and assisted in the scoring and selection processes. Created the high level network, SAN and server designs. Designed the workflows for the new system, presenting them to the users at several points to ensure we had the users’ buy in. Devised the data model for the organisation of the content within the MAM and helped define the metadata schema. Defined a XML schema used for the delivery of metadata from third parties. Wrote the System Design Specification documents for the new MAM and the interfaces to third party systems such as Ooyala. -
Design EngineerSky Oct 2012 - Jan 2015OsterleyWorking as a contractor I produce high level solution design documentation as well as detailed low level Autocad drawings. Projects include a refresh of the existing BSkyB’s Tapeless System’s Test and Stage environments to bring them in line with Production, in additional to providing more environments and greater flexibility using both physical and virtual servers. Researching audio normalisation solutions and integrating them with existing workflows to provide EBU R128 compliant audio. Transcode profiles, workflows and automated quality control procedures for a refresh of the media delivery workflow for Sky Go. The migration and refresh of the old VT Area, to provide SD, HD and 3G tape ingest, dubbing, colour correction, outgest from the Tapeless System and emergency DR lines record to tape. -
Test AnalystBskyb Oct 2011 - Oct 2012OsterleyA contractor working on BSkyB’s key Tapeless Project, the scope of which is to implement a Media Asset Management system (MAM), associated technologies and interfaces to other systems, for use across the campus. I was responsible for managing and conducting the testing of the Rhozet Carbon Coder transcode farms, the tape ingest chain and the MAM to Transmission workflow. I also helped conduct the testing of the MAM/Avid interface (VizConnect) and regression testing of the MAM backend. As part of a small team I investigated and resolved key problems that would have prevented the system going live. These included Carbon Coder transcoder performance when using GPFS and Windows, STL subtitle injection into SD content when transcoding for transmission, as well as designing and proving alternate solutions for getting time critical media to transmission. -
Adhoc Bid Response WorkGearhouse Broadcast Jul 2012 - Sep 2013Watford, United KingdomWorking with the System Integration team to provide high level solution designs, bill of materials and system drawings in response to RFPs from high profile clients. For each section of the RFPs that I am responsible for I create an initial design and write a new RFP for each of the systems within the design. Vendors are shortlisted and the RFPs sent out, followed by design meetings if required. Once the responses have come back from the vendors I write a high level solution design, including drawings, and produce a BOM. -
Assistant Test ManagerSony Professional Nov 2009 - Oct 2011Bskyb, OsterleyA contractor for Sony working on a multi-million pound technical fit out project for BSkyB's new Sky Studios building. The project covers the design, installation and verification of the technical equipment and infrastructure within the building for areas such as studios and galleries, post production, media asset management, new media and playout. In a test role, I assisted in developing the overall test strategy for the project, following recognised methodology standards. I created test plans and test cases for cross component functional and inter-area operational tests. To ensure full test coverage I developed a detailed understanding of the whole design and the business workflows, as well working closely with Sony and Sky design engineers, business analysts and users. I oversaw and verified the system integrators’ test cases and testing, including defect management. I conducted Sony’s cross component functional testing in studios, MCR, Enhanced Control Rooms (for Red Button and New Media productions) and the International Commentary Voice Over booths. In the design role, I wrote and peer reviewed system design specifications, verified the design using proprietary Sony Design tools to identify and correct errors and updated the AutoCAD drawings and supporting documents.
