The LongThe year was 1997 and I was pursuing an Economics degree. After all, being the son of a successful entrepreneur, markets and commerce were in my blood. But so were art and design, passions nurtured by my mother, the most talented artist I know. Driven by the desire to create, I shifted focus to pursue a degree in Graphic Design. I took on every freelance graphic design gig I could find and quickly came to appreciate that my role was more than just making things “pretty”. I learned my work had a measurable impact on my clients' growth and financial success. This realization was empowering. When I joined, Citrix Online (formerly Expertcity) was in rapid-growth mode and pioneering the online advertising discipline of CRO. We measured the performance of every scrap of creative. For a designer newly emerged from the comfort of academia, the experience was humbling and illuminating. The attractiveness or soundness of a design, it turned out, didn't necessarily translate to conversions. How dare they! Thus began my obsession with understanding what actually drives conversions.During my time at AppFolio, I built, led, and scaled all facets of the Creative Services team. We designed, developed, and managed the websites, blogs, marketing creative, and the processes required to support the ambitious sales and marketing efforts of multiple SaaS products. We created robust email and landing page frameworks, allowing us to efficiently deploy, test and gain insights. Integrating quantitative and qualitative data led to a steady improvement in creative performance and, ultimately, business growth. I’m proud of my team’s role in AppFolio's growth from 30 employees to over 1,200, 0 customers to more than 15,000, and from a $40K startup to a $360+ million publicly traded company.The PersonalI am happiest when I’m with family. I feel most alive in wild places, farthest from the road. I make music. I love dogs (but not Cattle Dogs, I have my reasons).
