The Royal College of Anaesthetists is the professional body responsible for the specialty throughout the UK. It is the third largest Medical Royal College in the UK by membership, with a combined membership of 26,000 fellows and members. The RCoA ensure the quality of patient care by safeguarding standards in the three specialties of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine.As CEO, I am responsible to the Trustees for the strategic leadership of the College, including the implementation and delivery of the College’s vision, values and strategic plan.

The British Pharmacological Society represents well over 4000 members studying and working in research, drug discovery and development, throughout industrial, academic and clinical sectors. It supports world-class pharmacology through advocacy among policy makers, by organising scientific meetings and educational activities, and through its portfolio of highly regarded journals: the British Journals of Pharmacology (BJP) and Clinical Pharmacology (BJCP) and Pharmacology Research and Perspectives.With a background in arts and communications, I became CEO of the British Pharmacological Society in June 2012. I was charged with delivering the Society’s 5 year strategic plan, including through a major plan to diversify revenue. As CEO, I had overall responsibility for strategic and financial management, business development, human resources, policy development, governance and the oversight of major projects which were designed to support the UK and international pharmacology community. In 2017, I became Managing Director of the Society's wholly owned trading subsidiary, BPS Assessment Ltd.

I joined BPS as Head of Communications and Development in 2009 with a remit to enhance the Society’s engagement with its members and the public. I oversaw the delivery of a public relations portfolio that included new online services, enhanced outreach activities, and improved relations with the media.During this time I also drove the Society’s journals and publications strategy, its relationships with national and international partners, and its collaboration on new initiatives in support of UK drug discovery, development and delivery.

As Head of Communications for BPS I handled press, PR and marketing, managed a major website redevelopment including the provision of a new member networking area, planned and implemented outreach initiatives to new members via social media opportunities,and implemented membership recruitment and retention drives, brand development and strategic comms planning.

TVC Films is a specialist education and training media provider. Clients include energy and transport companies and international health-care organisations. As Producer, I had responsibility for identifying potential revenue streams, producing targeted marketing campaigns and providing client management services once contracts had been won.During my time at TVC, I developed the ability to direct and edit corporate video, specified web sites and other communications channels, and was responsible for the company's move into e-learning.

Highlights in an eight year period included a role in Children of Dune working alongside Susan Sarandon, Steven Berkoff and James McAvoy. My theatre work involved appearances at the Nottingham Theatre Royal, the Royal Court and the successful transfer of a new play from a pub theatre to the West End. I filmed for TV and cinema in a variety of locations around the world, and in work ranging from Sarah Kane’s challenging plays to a Marmite advert. This part of my career made me versatile, able to stay motivated in an uncertain and unpredictable environment, and able to engage audiences in public speaking and presentations.
