I am a strategist with a technological background. I've worked across government and implemented medium technical changes, as well as setting up the engineering function in a startup transitioning from ideation to delivery. I've worked as a Private Secretary, which is a Chief of Staff role by any other name.My therapist thanks you for not approaching me with any further opportunities right now, because I have poor impulse control and I'm already doing too much

Working across multiple teams, I do my best to make sure services are supportable, maintainable, and secure
Focussing on writing serverless code with an emphasis on idiomatic Python and efficiency.
At the DfE I'm working to support the software engineering community. Some of things I'm implementing:- DDaT Pay Framework, to improve recruitment and retention in the department of DDaT professionals- experiments into virtual environments such as GitHub Codespaces to investigate whether there's a strategic case for moving away from high-powered, expensive developer laptops
In this role, I lead a small multi-disciplinary team to write a well-structured, effective business case. The case was for a cross-government service, and so over the course of six weeks I immersed myself in the service and understood its end-to-end value chain. I applied strategic thinking to the chain and proposed a new approach to senior management and various boards. I delegated to people with specialist knowledge, such as the economist who drew up the benefits model, while staying close enough to be able to speak on it with authority. When I wasn't doing that, I was working on a cross-government strategy to identify how best we could prevent and remediate incidents in departments.
As Private Secretary I was responsible for ensuring my principal was well-briefed on all matters regarding their area of work: the financial position of the directorate; the wellbeing and mood of the staff; the pipeline of work we'd signed up to deliver; and the prevailing political mood.In this role I supported the move of the entire department to remote working, ensuring every business unit of the department could continue the work of serving the Prime Minister and the country despite the pandemic.

I write well-tested, thoughtful code for government. In Python.Specifically, I worked on the Digital Marketplace, a product that enables government to outsource outcomes, rather than requirements. The platform has saved millions for the taxpayer.
I'm responsible for:* the recruitment, retention, and growth of our technical staff* the technical strategy for the company, which underpins the CEO's vision* the roadmap for our stable of products, in which I'm supported by a great Product ManagerIn this role, I've encouraged our team to move to a TDD approach. This change was implemented alongside regular development, which required managing stakeholder expectations down as short-term delivery was de-prioritised. Since implementing this change, we're seeing 40% fewer bugs in production.Right now we're migrating to AWS. We're looking to expand aggressively over the next couple of years, so a cloud solution that scales is a huge boost to that. I'm managing this, alongside the Dockerisation of our web application to further leverage the scaling power of the cloud.Next stop: microservices.I'm proud to say that in this role I've coached a great secondee from no coding skill to producing a working service. I strongly believe that as seniors our priorities should be upskilling our juniors and I'm pleased that I've achieved that here.I will be moving on from this role in May

Apply4 provides a stable of SaaS products that make it easier for citizens to apply for permission from their local authority to film or hold an event, and easier for local authorities to grant those permissions! In this role I've decreased lead times by 75% and cycle times by 40%, and hold the roadmap for the platform. I will be coming to the end of this role at the end of August
