About Jonathan Hollow

I’m a writer, my award-winning book was published by Bloomsbury in October 2022. It distills my knowledge about financial education and evidence-based investing into a highly usable "manual" for pensions and investing. In May 2023 it won the "Work & Life" category at the Business Book Awards.I'm also a podcaster: check out my "Second Lives" series at:https://www.evidenceinvestor.com/introducing-second-lives-a-brand-new-podcast-series-from-tebi/I'm also a charity trustee, and I've recently completed a part-time MA in Ancient History, graduating with a distinction.Previously I worked as a senior leader. I have a 20-year record of formulating coherent and compelling strategies and business plans for public, private and voluntary sector organisations. I made excellent networks across those three sectors (and the four nations of the UK). I had 10 years of experience helping boards focus on the essential questions, and chaired a charity board for four years. I'm open to NED (or short-term strategy consulting) positions where I can make a difference to organisations that have a hunger for better vision, planning, innovation and consumer focus.

Listed skills include Stakeholder Management, Service Design, Proposition Development, Government, and 29 others.

Mar 2021 - Present

Member Board Of Trustees

Uk-Wide

Good Vibrations works with some of the most vulnerable people in society, in institutional settings – especially prisons. It takes the power of collective music-making into these settings to inspire confidence, creativity and connection. Although I have stepped down as Chair, I continue as a trustee.

Nov 2016 - Jan 2024

Chair

Good Vibrations Charity

London, England, United Kingdom

I was invited to become Chair in 2017, after less than a year as a trustee. I introduced a financial dashboard and oversaw the process that generated a fundamentally revised 2019–2022 strategy. Result: a more stable and effective charity. Turnover up 160%, number of people served up 220%, unrestricted reserves up from covering two months to six months. The charity has a clear strategic focus and KPIs to measure progress against execution. It has also proved unusually resilient in the Covid crisis.

Nov 2017 - Sep 2021

Head Of National And Corporate Strategy

London, United Kingdom

I was the senior responsible leader helping the board of the Money and Pensions Service to consider the evidence base for, and develop, a UK Strategy for Financial Wellbeing, which I then edited and wrote on behalf of the organisation. Once it was published I led the set-up of 11 “Challenge Groups” – fixed-task committees with 11 extremely senior chairs including Ben Page, CEO of Ipsos MORI, and Professor Dame Carol Black. These voluntary groups attracted 145 senior leaders from across the public, private and voluntary sectors. I designed their structure, terms of reference, briefed the chairs, and co-hosted all the inaugural meetings.

Jan 2019 - Jun 2020

Head Of Financial Capability, Strategy & Innovation

Leader of the team that developed the corporate strategy for the Money Advice Service and provided the secretariat and thought leadership for the Financial Capability Strategy for the UK. To make the annual case for the budget of the Money Advice Service, I regularly attended meetings of the Board of the Financial Conduct Authority, answering searching questions about value, risk and return. I also was answerable to the Financial Services Consumer Panel and Practitioner Panels, representing the main consumer bodies and banks.Result: a 56% increase in funding and consequent impact on people facing the most extreme problems with money and debt.

Dec 2017 - Dec 2018

Head Of Strategy & Innovation

Leader of the team that developed and articulated the corporate strategy for the organisation, and made the business case for an £8m innovation portfolio - the What Works Fund. The fund awarded grants to 60+ projects designed to test and deliver evidence of what works in improving people’s money management skills. The projects, selected from 409 applications, built world- leading evidence across all channels and many delivery settings all across the UK. Result: my work delivered support, tailored to individual circumstances, to 30,000 people across the four nations of the UK. They were helped to improve their money management skills, and every interaction was measured for effectiveness, building an evidence base all could share.

Oct 2016 - Dec 2017

Corporate Strategy Manager

Holborn, London

I assist the Executive Leadership team, CEO and Board in identifying and solving policy, customer and organisational challenges faced by the Service - and communicating the solutions we propose to a very active and interested community of stakeholders. This work rested on a three-year corporate strategy and the provision of an annual business plan. As well as these, I brought together the expertise from across (and outside) the business to generate papers on specific issues throughout the year. I was responsible for the annual business planning cycle, bringing together in a single coherent document and planning process the commercial and financial drivers; market analysis and customer need; and the technologies and services we offered. I supported the Money Advice Service Board, attending most of the board meetings each year. I worked with senior external stakeholders from the civil service, the financial services industry and the voluntary sector to understand their challenges and their expectations of the Money Advice Service.

Jul 2014 - Oct 2016

Innovation Director

London, United Kingdom

I applied a systematic approach to innovation on Serco's work with private and public sector clients. I ran about 40 different innovation projects and programmes, in business domains as diverse as digital service design, e-commerce logistics, local government service design, contact centre services, and railway operations. I developed a powerful approach to capturing the ideas and views of whole teams in order to get the most creatively valuable solutions to problems and to ensure that solutions had wide and deep buy-in.In each case I ran a process that made the case for change; enabled senior leaders to define the priorities that innovation needed to solve; captured a range of innovations from internal staff and external suppliers; and defined the implementation plan or business strategy as required.I introduced the Spigit ideas management system to the business after a rigorous supplier selection.I have presented at international innovation conferences, digital leadership conferences, and many internal staff transformation/change conferences. I was a naturally engaging presenter and no slave to PowerPoint.I took part in about 25 of Serco’s major bids, and played a key part in winning valuable and prestigious contracts. My relaxed presentational style played its role in the successful final pitch for more than £80m of revenue.

Dec 2011 - Apr 2014

Innovation & Strategy Director, Businesslink.Gov.Uk

This was a development of the previous role, continuing my work on systematic innovation and strategic channel management for a leading government website.I managed relationships with senior civil servants for six years on the businesslink.gov.uk programme, including bilateral briefings to capture issues and follow up actions with senior departmental officials every two months.Over the course of my career I successfully briefed senior ministers in the UK government, one-on-one, including the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, and ministers from the Cabinet Office and departments for Education and Business. I was the author and editor of a major strategic business case that secured a funding increase to £119m from HM Treasury ➙ HMRC in 2011, the toughest spending environment in 60 years.I was on the executive team of a £35m per annum Serco business unit, and as well as representing my team, drove organisational development and staff engagement among 200+ staff. I was responsible for managing 70 people, blending the disciplines of content creation, customer insight, metadata and search, and stakeholder relations in a single effective team and taskforce.

Apr 2009 - Dec 2011

Head Of Transformational Government & Strategy

I was at the heart of HMRC & Serco's successful programme of work to identify the 170+ government websites that featured business-facing content and transactions, and migrate those services to businesslink.gov.uk following the Sir David Varney "Transformational Government" agenda. This involved working with website owners from communications, delivery, strategy and back office in around 22 Whitehall departments and agencies. I worked particularly with senior civil servants to ensure that the central website had a clear map of departmental strategies, and could ensure that its service delivery supported them.I was the originator of several highly successful interactive products created on the businesslink.gov.uk website. One of these products – “Print Portfolio” – drove up site registrations by 40% overnight.

Apr 2007 - Apr 2009

Portal Editor, Business Link Programme

This role was a continuation of the role in the DTI, but under employment to Serco following an outsource arrangement.

Dec 2005 - Apr 2007

Portal Editor

Seconded by the Cabinet Office to work on the business.gov project - first as the editor of the Starting up in business life event on the ukonline portal site (working principally with Office of the e-Envoy and the Inland Revenue) and then as a core team member carrying out a scoping study as to the customer proposition and planning for the businesslink.gov.uk portal site. The site, launched in late 2003, is seen as a major plank of the government's e-strategy, focused on improving customer experience of government, driving takeup of online transactions, and driving cross-departmental cooperation. The initial scoping study, of which I was a key team member, was a significantly-budgeted market research, stakeholder engagement and planning exercise to make sure that the portal was built on the right foundations.

Apr 2002 - Dec 2005

Editor-In-Chief

Editor in Chief of the Knowledge Network, a pan-government knowledge management project complementing the UKonline initiative. I led a team of seven editors content managing policy information fed through the network from 24 different departments, liaising with senior officials across these departments, and with the Permanent Secretary. I defined and delivered training and communications plans to embed this centrally-driven project in departments with widely varying policy areas and needs.
