About Jonathan Lewis

Coming from a small town in West Virginia, I am honored to be a Brennan Scholar at the University of Notre Dame. As a junior Mechanical Engineering student with minors in Bioengineering and Innovation & Entrepreneurship, I enjoy exploring the intersection between engineering and the healthcare system. My fellowships and internships have taken me beyond West Virginia and Notre Dame, helping me develop a deeper understanding of the gaps in medical care worldwide. There are significant differences in the healthcare provided in rural and urban areas. On average, there is a 17-year gap between technological advancements and their implementation in medical treatment, with this disparity fluctuating dramatically across communities. From classrooms and clubs to fellowships and internships, I aim to leverage the education and mentorship I receive to address this discrepancy. I hope to innovate new solutions and adapt current technology to improve accessibility for all people, both domestically and abroad. After completing my time at Notre Dame, I plan to pursue a PhD to further develop the skills necessary to create meaningful change. I love meeting new people and creating new experiences and opportunities. Feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn or email me at jlewis28@nd.edu.

Jonathan Lewis Work Experience Details
  • Sapienza Università Di Roma
    Research Assistant
Sapienza Università Di Roma Aug 2024 - Present
    Rome, Latium, Italy
I am currently engaged in research at Sapienza University under the mentorship of Dr. Silvia Milana. This role enables me to apply my skills in mechatronics and MATLAB to analyze structural dynamics through natural frequency measurements. My project focuses on measuring the natural frequency of various structure designs, utilizing accelerometers and a force sensor hammer. By comparing these measurements to those from the same structures with simulated damage, I aim to understand the effects of structural degradation on natural frequency. This research has provided me with hands-on experience in data acquisition and signal processing, enhancing my analytical skills and contributing to advancements in structural health monitoring.
  • Shirley Ryan Abilitylab
Research Intern (Summer) / Research Aid (Academic Year)
Shirley Ryan Abilitylab May 2024 - Present
    Chicago, Illinois, United States
During my research internship at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab under Dr. Miriam Rafferty, I immersed myself in the intersection of implementation science and engineering. My work included over 50 hours of qualitative analysis and contributions to the ImPEx study, where I performed ActiGraph data analysis to assess physical activity patterns in patients. I also worked on three projects under the STARS grant, which formed the basis of my poster and upcoming paper.I had the opportunity to shadow over a dozen engineers, gaining valuable insights into their innovative work. A highlight of my internship was presenting my poster, "Unifying User-Centered Design and Implementation Science: Strategies for Effective Health Service Integration," at the symposium. This project, which explores how these two fields can reduce the gap between research and clinical practice, is now being developed into a first-authored paper.
  • University Of Notre Dame
Research Assistant In The Tissue Mechanics Laboratory
University Of Notre Dame Jan 2024 - Present
    Notre Dame, In
I am currently engaged in research at the Tissue Mechanics Laboratory, under the guidance of Dr. Glen Niebur and PhD candidate Meghana Machireddy. This experience provides me with the opportunity to delve into mechanically oriented research, enhance my computational skills, and advance my knowledge in chemical engineering. Our project focuses on culturing bone explants using an in-situ model, employing mechanical testing systems for loading, and utilizing CT scans for analysis. My role involves utilizing immunohistochemistry to stain for sclerostin protein expression and integrating these results with finite element models to establish correlations between local strain and gene expression in cells.
  • University Of Notre Dame
    Skills Mentor
University Of Notre Dame Sep 2023 - Present
    Learning Resource Center
As a skills mentor at the University of Notre Dame, I work with students of all ages who face various academic challenges. I have mastered a wide range of organizational skills that I teach effectively to suit different learning and personality styles. During our sessions, I empathize with students, understand their individual needs, struggles, and strengths, and discuss solutions, including time management, study techniques, focus skills, and test preparation. Students leave our sessions equipped with new skills and a plan to take active steps towards improving their academic and professional lives.
  • University Of Notre Dame
Research Assistant In The Chang Lab
University Of Notre Dame Jan 2023 - Oct 2023
    Notre Dame, Indiana, United States
I collaborated with The Chang Lab, under the leadership of Dr. Hsueh-Chia Chang, and closely worked with PhD candidate Sonu Kumar. Within this chemical engineering-based laboratory, my initial focus was on enhancing biomarkers for cardiovascular disease. By integrating ionic and nanofluidic circuits into liquid biopsy platforms, we developed a method to effectively sort normal and harmful cells and dissociate protein-RNA complexes, thereby identifying significant biomarkers for cardiovascular disease. Subsequently, we designed user-friendly disposable test kits suitable for rural communities, addressing a crucial gap in healthcare by enabling early diagnosis and improving accessibility to healthcare. Concurrently, while I delved into research on biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease, Kumar pursued work on cancer biomarkers.
  • University Of Notre Dame
    Eagan Fellow
University Of Notre Dame May 2023 - Jul 2023
    Europe, North America
In the summer of 2023, I spent time doing independent research across Europe and North America to explore different healthcare systems for strong and weak points that need attention. I conducted interviews with professionals in healthcare, engineering, law, and business to discuss how each discipline could be used to bring relief to the inequities found between rural and urban healthcare. I also used this time to explore more parts of the world to diversify my perspectives and social skills.
