I was one of the first professional Police Heads of Communication in the UK. I built a team and a structure, to ensure we were able to excel in a very difficult environment.A most varied role, from creating the communication approach from murders to reorganisation and from civil unrest to neighbourhood policing . I drove a significant digital strategy to improve the interaction with the public. I was at the heart of national programs including, the regional communications lead for Emergency Services Mobile Communications Programme (ESMCP). This is providing the next generation communication system for the emergency services (especially police, fire and rescue, and ambulance). I was responsible for structure and standards, development of new concepts, team management, media approaches, internal communication and advancement of online communication. I provided advice and guidance to senior teams.I co-ordinated national, regional and local agendas for the force and the wider criminal justice system. I dealt with complex and highly sensitive messages, for example, police service restructuring, response to major incidents and public reassurance.I developed a broad range of stakeholder relationships across all departments within the force, national bodies, local councils, volunteer organisations and other partners to help drive forward improvements. I communicated across a multi-disciplined organisation of 3700 staff and 500 volunteers. I was actively involved in project planning and led on a structured business communication evaluation approach. I supported the development of the organisation's commitment, values and leadership pledges. I led on the communications for the Derbyshire's joint police and fire headquarters.I was the Chair of the Derbyshire Warning and Informing Group.

I founded Stepladder to deliver impactive and inspiring drama performances to help support young people. I designed and delivered the performances, managed an outstanding team, facilitated and evaluated. It was wonderful to see the young people engaged and, we had an impact in helping them the right decisions. The main drive of Stepladder was to have a positive impact on young people's lives. In essence, we wanted to make sure that through our drama young people feel supported from a practical perspective, especially pointing them in the direction of sources of support. We know that young people are growing up in an ever-changing complex world, and we want to engage them, but also let them have fun through our performances.We adapted drama to suit the requirements of any organisation working with young people. So whilst we had a series of productions, we ensured that we tailored these to the specific audiences' needs. I was an active Board member of Derby Museums Trust which manages the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, the Silk Mill Museum and Pickford's House Museum. I supported the development of Derby Museums to help realise their world-class potential. It was brilliant being part of such a highly-motivated team!The progressive museum is having a positive impact on Derby's cultural offering and economy. I was a member of the Visitor Experience Committee helping develop a structured approach to increasing visitor numbers and enhancing the visits.
