Profile bio

About Jonathan Butler

I direct digital operations, strategies and teams to achieve organizational goals and success. I'm as focused on delivering solutions that can drive value and results (the "what") as I am committed to collaborative practices that build trust and elevate people (the "how").In 2020 I joined NPR as Director, Station Digital Solutions. From 2007 to 2020 I lead Vermont Public Radio's digital team through rapid change and growth. I direcedt the digital operations, platforms, budget and strategy. While providing digital strategy and leadership, I remain engaged in the front-line work, producing web content, testing code, recruiting & training staff, resolving technical issues and helping create award-winning online journalism. My previous experience spans industries, competencies and geography. I started my career at a global consulting firm, learning technology, process re-engineering and change management on large projects across industries. I then pivoted my career from the large and corporate clients toward start-ups, small businesses and non-profits: I loved the work, but I preferred the non-profit culture and mission-driven work. The thread throughout my career so far has been working with organizations I respect, creating digital products that solve user problems and helping the organizations change to be more successful. My skills span hands-on technology production, management and communications, team leadership and strategic planning. With this range and depth of experience I'm able to help craft the big picture strategy, remain grounded in the users' experience and the team's work and align the entire team toward the shared vision.

Listed skills include Social Media, Blogging, Web Design, Social Media Marketing, and 37 others.

Director Of Digital Strategies

Colchester, Vt

* Provide digital leadership, having overseen the growth of VPR's digital services from a relatively static website with thousands of monthly users in 2007, to the current portfolio of live streams, on-demand content, news and mobile products serving hundreds of thousands of monthly users.* Direct the digital production, publishing and distribution platforms for all live streams, podcasts, news and music at VPR.net.* Manage and recruit ever-changing teams, comprised over time of web developers, producers, podcast manager/editors and specialists as well as a cadre of freelancers. * Manage key vendor relationships, providing critical services such as live streams, web hosting and mobile apps.* Analyze, compile, track and understand all digital audience metrics, using them to inform operations, audience measurement, user-profiling and strategic planning at all levels of the organization.* Model strong communication, meeting facilitation and public speaking skills. Represent VPR in the local, digital and public media communities. I'm an experienced and effective on-air fundraiser during pledge drives. * Served on the work group developing VPR's latest strategic plan and the team initially charged with operationalizing the plan.* Provided leadership and production for many digital content/news projects. Examples include project managing the Time To Vote project, serving as the Data Editor on the Gunshots Project. * Key member of the team building VPR's on-demand capabilities and services. This has included selecting vendors, establishing monetization strategies, hosting a series of events, and launching a number of successful podcasts, such as 'Brave Little State,' 'But Why,' and 'Jolted'.* Awards: VPR.org has won numerous awards during my tenure, including seven Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Best Website; 2015 PRNDI National Award for Multimedia Coverage; and a 2015 AMPE Journalism Excellence Award for Community Engagement.

Sep 2011 - Jan 2020

Online Manager & Producer

After spending most of my career in some form of consultancy, developing products for many different projects and clients, I wanted to focus: I determined I wanted to run one large website rather than many smaller ones, for one organization I wholeheartedly respect rather than several. At the same time, public media broadcasters needed more digital talent, and I was fortunate to land this opportunity at VPR.* Provided extensive content production experience across departments, producing code, podcasts, blogs, social media, images, audio, data sets, databases and visualizations. * Completed the launch of VPR's first web content management system.* Lead digital news projects, such as VPR's first digital election night coverage in 2008.* Established VPR as a community leader in the early days of social media, working with others to initiate Vermont’s first statewide Town Meeting Day live-tweeting. VPR won the first-ever Burlington Social Media Day Award for Best Non-Profit.

Mar 2007 - Aug 2011

Participant, Public Radio Incubation Lab

Npr

In 2019 NPR launched the Incubation Lab, "a rotating team dedicated to developing and testing solutions to some of the network's most urgent strategic and practical challenges." The inaugural Lab was dedicated to leveraging NPR's digital scale to drive value to the NPR Member stations. The cross-functional team was comprised of five NPR employees and one teammate from a Member station; I was that latter, on leave from my role at VPR. The team was dedicated full time to the work of the Lab and, as the first rotation, we were focused on establishing the initial practices and culture of the Lab as much as addressing the key challenge. In those four months we established tools and protocols supported our principals of 'maximum collaboration' and 'radical transparency.' Through surveys, Slack, Google Drive, video chat and post-it notes, we were able to collaborate as a team and a network, in real-time as well as asynchronously. Through weekly readouts, regular presentations and webinars, and a regularly updated blog, we shared the work openly and continuously. We developed, designed, tested and recommended a set of tools and practices that would better serve NPR's digital audience and drive more value to NPR's Member stations, in the form of more data, donor leads and donations.

Mar 2019 - Jul 2019

Senior Account Strategist

Cambridge, Ma

I joined this start-up to develop a proprietary CMS product (it was 2002, after all) and stayed on as it pivoted to being a web/CMS/CRM consultancy for local small businesses and non-profits. I wore many hats, as one does in small agencies, but it's also where I excel: understanding all parts of the project, from purpose to pixels, and facilitating collaboration among all parties and talents toward the shared goals.* Account Strategist working with clients from a variety of industries. Tracked financials, guided the project life-cycle and managed the client relations and day-to-day communications.* Project leader for teams of designers and developers building custom websites and applications. As the leader I would provide direction, coaching, producing, coding, testing, documenting, communicating and providing any other feedback or support needed to keep the entire team moving forward together. * Product manager for team developing Content Management (CMS) and Client/Customer Management (CRM) solutions, with platforms such as Salesforce.com and Drupal, as well as custom, proprietary solutions.* Team Highlights: We designed and launched a new website for one of Boston's highest-profile cultural institutions. Developed a manuscript tracking system for the authors and editors of one of the top medical textbooks. Created digital marketing solutions for a fast-growing medical software company and a member web-portal for a non-profit municipal association.

2002 - 2006 ~4 yrs

Office Manager, Crm Developer, Change Manager

Greater Boston Area

I took my talents from large corporate projects to small business. Rather than be one small part of a corporate project, I could manage all parts of an organization-wide digital transformation.* Converted and digitized the company's paper records systems and processes. Working independently, completed the development, testing and implementation of a custom CRM that tracked students, class registrations, memberships, inventory, reservations and financial transactions.* Retrained the staff to adapt to the new process. Managed the team through data conversion, system launch, post-launch support and follow up. Documented systems to support training of new seasonal staff.* Generated immediate, significant savings and efficiencies through new systems. The introduction of custom reporting transformed the member services operation and the business intelligence available to managers. Also, "was always nice to the students and members."

2000 - 2002 ~2 yrs

Senior Consultant

I started my career working on large projects in the corporate world. I learned a lot.* Learned the fundamentals of coding and testing, process and workflow improvement, project management, change management and client relations.* Supervised small teams of consultants in client settings, managing time, planning work and reviewing work and performance.* Gained valuable professional experience working with large organizations, with colleagues from around the world, on high-visibility projects, meeting aggressive deadlines.* Traveled and relocated for projects, for tenures ranging from 3-12 months, living and working in Annapolis MD, Ithaca NY, Ft. Walton Beach FL and Pleasanton CA. Gained invaluable personal and professional experience working on a variety of teams across a diverse set of work cultures.
