2-3 Direct ReportsI provided technical expertise, microbial risk assessments, and leadership for a number of our consumer brands including: Gatorade, Quaker Foods, and Tropicana (Now part of Tropicana Brands Group). As part of a global department, this involves working with national and international suppliers to PepsiCo. I also work on managing risk at our facilities by updating or creating microbiological sampling plans and help to identify sources of microbial contamination while working to develop mitigation strategies. In addition, I currently oversee the following:-Our R&D microbiology laboratory based out of Barrington, Illinois. -PepsiCo Global Laboratory Approvals Team. Both Internal and External Standards/Requirements-Co-lead for content and coordination of Food Safety Center of Excellence Global Town Halls (100+ employees)-PepsiCo Internal Microbiology Method Revision and Harmonization.

In principle, I worked on maximizing efficiency and improving the technical conduct of the work performed through leadership and experience. Part of my focus was to analyze regulatory guidelines to address gaps in regulatory compliance.My main objective was to make sure that the team I led understood how to produce quality, reliable data and that each individual was working towards their own personal goals.

As a Study Director, I had to learn and understand both the technical and regulatory side of antimicrobial testing methods and also how to interact with clients to help them understand the work performed on EPA regulated studies. My time in this role was highlighted by working extensively on antimicrobial testing under the European Norms (EN), as well as adapting and developing custom protocols based on EPA draft guidance.

After completing my Master of Science I stayed in the Food Safety Microbiology Laboratory at the University of Minnesota as a researcher working on an academia/company collaboration project focused on the validation and implementation of a rapid detection method for the foodborne pathogen Escherichia coli O157:H7. Through this experience, I have continued to use and strengthen my eye for details and critical thinking.

My thesis research project aimed to characterize the internalization of Salmonella Typhimurium within peanut plants and seedpods. We were able to characterize the importance of water and soil type on Salmonella internalization through peanut seedpods. We also characterized the impact of the peanut symbiont, Bradyrhizobium, on the ability of Salmonella to internalize peanut plants germinated in inoculated soil.

My role at MarketFresh was to coordinate and execute the daily tests in the laboratory. MarketFresh is a small food microbiology laboratory, so my duties ranged from performing qPCR and preparing and sending reports to washing dishes. We performed most major food microbiological analyses (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., Listeria spp., APC, LAB, coliforms, non-pathogenic E. coli) on a wide variety of food matrices. My time there was highlighted by working with a team of individuals to become ISO 17025 accredited. My role on the project was to update SOPs and also to assist in the development and implementation of the QC program.

This position was my first experience with QC analysis and introduced me to ISO regulations. I worked in the manufacturing plant's laboratory where I performed analyses on lubricants and fuels. Most of the work was related to material and viscosity analysis.
