The Research Informatics Office is the principal outlet for Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO) to direct investigator support and collaboration via innovative data-driven approaches.The CRIO is responsible for coordinating the healthcare data, infrastructure, and services for the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI), the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences, and the Institute for Precision Medicine (http://ipm.pitt.edu). The CRIO makes decisions for long-term support of software, service staff, and hardware/cloud computing services, develops a financial support plans for chargebacks and sustained growth of the healthcare data linked to initiatives across the campus. This includes coordinating activities as a shared office and laboratory of Shyam Visweswaren, MD, PhD and Michael Becich MD, PhD, focused on biomedical data science research activities.The CRIO also coordinates close working relationships with investigators at Carnegie Mellon University, as exemplified by the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (http://www.psc.pitt.edu).DBMI’s current clinical and healthcare data portfolio includes the NIH-funded Precision Medicine (All of US) Initiative, a CTSA Informatics Component with a research data repository (Neptune), a PCORnet informatics hub site and data repository (PaTH Network), an informatics and data hub for the NCATS-funded Evolve to Next-gen Accrual to Clinical Trials (ENACT), and a CDC-NIOSH funded National Mesothelioma Virtual Bank (NMVB). These are associated with over $135M funding for current translational informatics initiatives, NIH Common Fund programs Human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP) and Cellular Senescence Network (SenNet). The Institute for Precision Medicine (IPM), which focusses on translating biomedical research into personalized clinical care was an inaugural partner and continues today with two key programs Aurora and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation Global Data Hub.

Jonathan C. Silverstein, vice president for clinical research informatics at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) heads the Center for Biomedical Research Informatics (CBRI), whose mission is to preserve and improve human life through innovative collection and use of clinical data.

The University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory established the Computation Institute in 2000 to address the most challenging problems arising in the use of strategic computation and communications. Its establishment was motivated by the tremendous opportunities inherent in new approaches to research based on the large-scale application of computation, data, and communications, and the strategic importance to the University and Argonne of developing the capabilities required to exploit those opportunities.The Institute has already had a significant impact on the practice of computation at the University and Argonne. More than 70 Chicago faculty and Argonne scientists have been appointed as fellows and 30 full-time professional staff employed. Many high-profile and high-impact projects have been established, such as Open Science Grid, TeraGrid, Globus, the National Microbial Pathogen Research Center, the Social Informatics Data Grid, and the Chicago Biomedical Consortium.
