Jonathon was also a tremendous resource for me as we worked out how we wanted the platform's language features to evolve. His insights into trade-offs between different language design alternatives -- named parameters, strong and weak typing, use and abuse of recursion -- guided the development team as we went along. One of Jonathon’s greatest strengths is his ability to ask the right question. In meetings I found Jonathon to be pensive, waiting to ask the question that immediately identified the crux of the problem, which initiated progressive discussion. This skill was extremely valuable to us, as he was able to listen to a problem we were facing, quickly comprehend what we were describing, and ask pointed questions to help us arrive at a solution. Additionally, he always asked revealing questions which forced us to think critically about our code and improve our overall design. For these reasons we always invited Jonathon to any of our presentations and asked for feedback on the white paper we authored. Jonathon is a great mentor because he takes pride in finding the best solution, not just a solution. He was always willing to have a high level discussion about our design by offering his input for which solution made the most sense. For example, we discussed which language should be used to implement our machine learning component. Although we had the option of any Spark compatible language (Java, Python, Scala), Jonathon used his extensive knowledge of the three languages to suggest Scala, after outlining the pros and cons of each language. From there he was happy to review our Scala code where he stressed the importance of writing code that is more than just functional, but additionally clear and concise. My time with Jonathon this summer revealed that he is knowledgeable and thoughtful, characteristics he displays in and outside of the workplace. He led engaging discussions at intern outings, ranging from thought provoking conversations about culture to light hearted conversations about hobbies. This mix, of knowledge and desire to learn, is what makes Jonathon a great mentor and a valued member to any team. "
