About Jonathon Fanning

I am a dedicated clinician with over 15 years of experience in Medicine, including specialist training in Anaesthesia, Intensive care, Internal Medicine and Clinical Trials. Passionate about advancing clinical research, I have a PhD from UQ, a MSc from Oxford and I balance research leadership, teaching and mentoring alongside active medical practice.My research portfolio is diverse. I am most passionate about harm minimisation (especially neurological injury) in operative and critical care settings.Bringing together expertise from different disciplines is key to innovative discovery and advancing perioperative medicine and research. I build research capacity through collaboration with national and international research institutions. I recruit and supervise senior scientists, clinician-researchers, and top PhD and MPhil students. I value the diverse perspectives of multidisciplinary colleagues at all stages of their career. My collaborative networking efforts have helped to expand the Critical Care Research Group’s global research and impact resulting in co-funding, co-publication, and co-supervision with investigators across the globe. I also foster relationships between scientists, engineers, clinicians and consumers to address unmet clinical needs and improve patient outcomes, by promoting translational research strategies.I actively foster research networks and ensure research integrity through leadership positions such as co-chair of the Queensland Cardiovascular Research Network (QCVRN); Queensland Critical Care Research Network (QCCRN); as an Expert Panel Member and writing committee representative for Therapeutic Guidelines; and, Associate Editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM).I am a regular Peer reviewer for grant funding bodies (e.g. TPCH Foundation, UQ, Heart Foundation, Queensland Health) and numerous research journals (e.g. Circulation, Heart, Neurology, Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry) and have delivered 50+ presentations at major international and national scientific meetings for most major Colleges and Societies related to Anaesthesia, Surgery, Intensive care, Cardiology, and Neurology.

Critical Care Research Group (CCRG), Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS), and The University of Queensland (UQ). The CCRG is a world leader in the field of critical care research and biomedical engineering, with a focus on developing technologies that improve outcomes for critically ill patients. Responsibilities: 1) manage the research undertaken by clinical research personnel; 2) advise and guide 76 non-medical research staff to ensure clinical relevance of pre-clinical research; and 3) strategically plan and direct the group’s research and establish research objectives. As Perioperative and Neurology Research Program Lead I supervise a team of 20 clinician researchers, higher degree students and professional staff. Under my leadership we have expanded the neurological and imaging research focus, contributing to CCRG becoming a Partner Organisation of UQ’s ARC Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology. Our team has successfully obtained more than $32.5M in funding over the past 10 years, leveraging personal grant funds, team grant funds and funds awarded to mentees. Highlights of my personal contribution to the groups success include highlights such as:I • Queensland Government, Health Innovation, Investment and Research Office Fellowship ($250,000)• Metro North Health Services ‘Rising Star’ Research Excellence Award• The Prince Charles Hospital Award for Best Published Paper• Heart Foundation Collaboration and Exchange Award ($5,000)
