During Jon’s tenure at Buell, I was consistently impressed by his passion and hands-on approach to leadership. On the Operations side, Jon had the vision and wherewithal to form the strongest and most effective Operations Team that Buell (or Harley-Davidson for that matter) ever had. This team went from being stuck in old practices and methods that were not very predictive or productive to truly being state-of-the-art. It was truly inspirational to walk the assembly line and experience the type of professionalism, work ethic, stability and control that were reached there. The path to this state was not easy and involved a fresh approach and associated courage to make the painful personnel and process changes that were necessary. It was a privilege to experience the Manufacturing Engineering and Assembly groups become fully engaged in helping Product Development ensure that our systems and components were truly designed for efficient and effective production. Furthermore, this same spirit of collaboration led to what would culminate as our most “silent” launch; that of the 2010 Model Year product line. Similarly, Jon grew his Operations Purchasing group to become very predictive and efficient, making sure that they collaborated very closely with our Purchasing Engineering group in order to control costs and effect clean hand-offs. Specifically in Product Development, Jon worked very intensely with Erik Buell on pushing forward a high level of strategic relevance in our product line and supporting programs. It is by no coincidence that Buell had its greatest racing success while Jon was our President. It is truly a shame that, due to the state of the economy and the havoc it inflicted on the Motorcycle Industry, Harley-Davidson decided to discontinue the Buell line right at the time when Jon’s and Erik’s strategic leadership was beginning to bear fruit. At the time of our closure, Buell had the strongest, most cohesive and most focused team it ever had. And, once again, this was in no small part due to Jon’s vision and leadership skills.
