Jon helped establish the first independent, Spanish immersion PK-8 school in California, growing the entire school community, spaces, employee group and revenues by more than threefold in 10 years. EBI became a leader and model for international education, supporting other start-up schools and attracting scores of visitors from around the world. EBI graduates currently attend the most competitive schools in the Bay Area. Critical to this success was developing a strong sense of community in one of the most diverse independent school communities in California, with students of color or mixed heritages students composing over 60% of the student body, and faculty and staff from over 15 countries.Specific achievements included:• Retiring start-up debt within two years of taking headship and continued on to build reserves• Engaging entire community in process and implementation of multiple strategic plans, including the facilities master plan• Leading school through first authorization by the International Baccalaureate and first accreditation by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)• Deepening culture of philanthropy with 100% participation in annual fund for 10 years• Collaboratively organizing school’s first capital campaign, raising over $2M• Starting school’s endowment, launching the alumni organization and developing major donor program• Developing a department of diversity, equity and inclusion, and implemented framework for supporting cross-cultural communication and understanding

The American School Foundation (ASF), Mexico City is one of the largest (2,400 students) and oldest (1888) American schools in the world and is a bilingual English/Spanish school. Jon eventually led the ASF Lower School, a community of approximately 940 students, 700 families and 98 full-time faculty and staff. He was contracted to lead the school in the achievement of two major goals: build a stronger sense of community and increase the level of academic excellence. To achieve those goals, Jon collaborated with the stakeholders across the community as they:• Implemented various programs to develop a greater sense of community across the school for students, families and employees• Restructured the leadership team to create systems for greater faculty input and more collaborative decision making• Revamped the professional development structures in lower school to include greater faculty collaboration• Established systems for collecting data to analyze best teaching practices for student learning• Evaluated discipline system to create systems for balancing the individual student with community needs
