About Jon Grabelle Herrmann

For over 20 years, I have been nonprofit executive, repeat entrepreneur, and fundraiser, today at Keshet and in past roles at Volunteers of Legal Service, USA250, Pre-K for PA, J Street, and as the founder of Campus Philly.I am ally with a personal stake in Keshet’s success and our work for LGBTQ equality. I am a proud parent of two openly queer kids. I am the rebbetzin and partner to my wife, Rabbi Lauren Grabelle Herrmann, who leads SAJ-Judaism That Stands For All in NYC, a participant in Keshet’s synagogue training program.Born and raised in North Jersey and later living most of my adult life in Philadelphia prior to moving to New York City in 2015, I maintain a complicated system of dual loyalties to various New York and Philadelphia sports teams. And I believe that our liberation is bound up in the liberation of all people.

New York, New York, United States
Keshet: For LGBTQ Equality in Jewish LifeKeshet envisions a world in which all LGBTQ Jews and our families can live with full equality, justice, and dignity. By strengthening Jewish communities and equipping Jewish organizations with the skills and knowledge they need to make all LGBTQ Jews feel welcome, we work to ensure the full equality of all LGBTQ Jews and our families in Jewish life. We also create spaces in which all queer Jewish youth feel seen and valued and advance LGBTQ rights nationwide.
  • Volunteers Of Legal Service
    Director Of Philanthropy & Development
Volunteers Of Legal Service Apr 2019 - Feb 2022
    Greater New York City Area
Volunteers of Legal Service provides free, civil legal services in New York City – when and where they are needed most – by partnering with law firms, companies, and community-based groups. We empower New Yorkers to attain dignity, security and opportunity, with free civil legal services offered to seniors and older veterans, unemployed workers, small business owners, immigrant young people, children & Families.VOLS was founded in 1984 by NYC Bar Association leaders to fill a void left by severe federal cuts to legal services. Since then, we have nimbly responded to emerging public health, natural disasters and economic crises such as the 1980s HIV/AIDS epidemic or the 2008 financial recession. Today, as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, we invite New Yorkers to join us as volunteers, donors or partners. For more, please visit: https://volsprobono.org/vols-newsletter/.
  • Philadelphia250
    Executive Director
    Philadelphia250 Nov 2014 - Feb 2019
    Philadelphia And New York
As executive director, I re-launched USA250 (now Philadelphia250) to envision and advance big plans for the United States Semiquincentennial, the USA’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The national anniversary offers a once-in-generations opportunity to inspire and unify the country, as expressed through high-profile civic and educational initiatives, events and exhibitions, historical and cultural attractions, and more. During my tenure, USA250 was proud to have proposed and promoted efforts by Congress to pass Public Law 114-196, establishing the new United States Semiquincentennial Commission, signed by the President in July 2016. We studied and advocated the idea for a national celebration campus in America's birthplace, Philadelphia, alongside robust initiatives and programs in all 50 states, DC, and US territories; conducted site visits to the Milan Expo world's fair in 2015 and to Ottawa in 2017 for Canada150; raised over $13.5M in commitments of cash and in-kind services between 2014-2027 from individuals, institutional partners, and major corporations (including Comcast, Johnson & Johnson, Walmart, and WPP); engaged and enlisted stakeholders and new partners across the country to envision projects related to education, history, civic engagement, food, and health.
  • Pre-K For Pa
    Southeast Campaign Director
    Pre-K For Pa Oct 2013 - Nov 2014
    Greater Philadelphia Area
With initial support from the William Penn Foundation as part of a statewide funding coalition, the nonpartisan Pre-K for PA issue campaign advocated access to high-quality pre-k for all 3- and 4-year-olds. PA state government increased its annual funding by $90M for early childhood education funding since the campaign's launch in 2014. The Southeast PA campaign was led by United Way, Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, PCCY, and DVAEYC. I helped launch the new statewide campaign; Managed Pre-K for PA's award-winning social media and local public relations efforts that led to dozens of mainstream news and opinion placements in Southeastern PA publications, attracting 5,600 individual and 190 organizational supporters locally (PhillyDoGooder, Pepperpot Awards); and Recruited 40+ senior executives to a regional executive leadership council.
  • J Street
    National Field Director
    J Street Jun 2010 - Sep 2013
    Greater Philadelphia Area
J Street is the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans fighting for the future of Israel as the democratic homeland of the Jewish people. The organization believes that Israel’s Jewish and democratic character depend on a two-state solution, resulting in a Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace and security. While I served in positions as deputy and later national field director, our team of 11 worked in 7 regional offices to change the political dynamics and local Jewish communal conversation about Israel in favor of pro-Israel, pro-peace positions in 46 lay-led chapters nationwide, double the number of chapters between the 2010 launch and Fall 2013. Our advocacy network later proved instrumental in promoting Congressional support for President Obama's nuclear deal with Iran.
  • Campus Philly
    Executive Director
    Campus Philly Feb 2001 - May 2010
I had the honor to serve for 9 years as founding executive director of Campus Philly, the Philadelphia-area nonprofit economic development organization, working to increase the pipeline of incoming college students and graduates who choose to stay in Greater Philadelphia. The organization was funded through contributed and earned revenues from government (local, state, federal), area colleges and universities, foundations, businesses, public agencies, and individual donors. During this period, Greater Philadelphia realized outcomes consistent with Campus Philly’s mission: a) College and university enrollments at Philadelphia‐area institutions grew by 22% between 2001‐2008, against a 17% national average increase (IPEDS); b) Enrolled students cited increased desire to stay in‐region after college (internal surveys); c) Greater Philadelphia’s educational attainment rate outpaced national increases amongst adults 25+ years in age (Select Greater Philadelphia, 1990‐2007); d) Philadelphia was ranked first (2008) and second (2009) among competitor cities as the best place for college graduates to work and live (MSNBC/ CareerBuilder.com); e) More recent graduates stayed in the region (2003‐2005) following significant increases in annual conferred degrees and a stable retention rate (IPEDS, internal surveys 2004‐2006). Campus Philly derived from two organizational mergers to expand impact and streamline activities, building off programs initiated by the Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, Visit Philadelphia, and the City of Philadelphia. Continuing to this day as a model replicated across the country, during my tenure Campus Philly was recognized in The Wall Street Journal, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Business Journal, local tv news stations, college newspapers, national trade journals, and online media. A special highlight was leading a 2008 recruiting mission to South Korea, to recruit students to attend Philadelphia‐area colleges and universities.
  • Urban Groove Networks
    Marketing Manager
Urban Groove Networks Feb 2000 - Dec 2000
After we launched an awesome, low-budget cable spot for philly2nite.com, featuring Scratch from The Roots, website traffic doubled just in time for the company to join the ranks of noble but failed dot coms.
