What started as a hobby became a career working in structural geology one way and another (until recently most of it was with GeoScience Limited), primarily on the challenges of mapping and predicting sub-seismic fracture distributions and their impact on fluid flow be it in the context of hydrocarbons or geothermal resource exploitation. It has been great fun because there is always something new to learn in geology.From the '90's I spent a lot of my oil industry time with tight carbonate reservoirs and with basement reservoirs, both of which usually rely heavily on an open and connected fracture system for commercial success. More recently i have worked mostly in deep geothermal reservoirs especially the United Downs and Eden projects in Cornwall, which tap into the highly fractured, high heat flow early Permian granites. And are becoming working geothermal systems now.My other great satisfaction has come from developing and giving fractured reservoir field courses in the Spanish Pyrenees with my co-tutor Luis Ardevol of Geoplay Pyrenees Ltd. I also give classroom courses in fractured carbonates and basements, for example in the Middle East.I have long experience in the fractured carbonates of the Zagros in Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran, the basement reservoirs of Yemen, the Palaeozoic quartzites or glaciogenic reservoirs of Algeria, and the Devonian to basement reservoirs of the Norwegian and UK North Sea sectors including West of Shetland. Other experience extends to the Gulf States, Russia, Ukraine, S America and Africa.As well as the Pyrenees field schools since 2006 I have delivered fractured carbonate or basement reservoir characterisation courses in the UK, Kuala Lumpur, Tripoli and Kuwait. Currently in addition to working independently I am Geological Advisor to GeoScience, who have provided technical services to the United Downs and Eden projects.
