My role as Portfolio Manager was to bring the development teams for different businesses (Equities, FX, Commodities and Rates) and locations (London, NY, HK & Tokyo, Moscow) into a unified structure for managing their customers and book of work, as well as keep an iron grip on the budget. I also managed projects myself, plus provided interim management for the FX team.3) The Financial & Risk Reporting Reconciliation programme was very high profile with regular reporting direct to the board. We spent five months in South America travelling through Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina. Then a brief stop in Australia visiting Sydney and Brisbane. The final three months were spent in SE Asia travelling through Bali, Singapore, Malaysia before leaving via Thailand.

DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation), which became part of Compaq then HP.DEC was a huge company at the time, and produced the VMS operating system. I worked on several internally developed Customer Relationship Management tools using Pascal on VMS.

Westinghouse Cubic designed and built the London Underground ticketing and turnstiles system. My role was software developer for the central control system using Pascal on VMS computers. I also became team leader. I worked on the London Underground system, Docklands Light Railway system, plus the prototype contact-less tickets (the precursor to the Oyster card).

The company designed, built and installed computer based fire alarm systems. My role was to programme the single board computers (with a Z80 CPU) to communicate with the fire alarm sensors, and to display the results textually and graphically on LCDs and monitors. I also worked at the installation sites (mainly hospitals) configuring and testing.

The company produced electronic products for industry, particularly single board computers using the Z80 CPU with RAM and PROM. I programmed the computers using machine code (using mnemonics) as well as Pascal. I also designed and tested the electronics for input/output devices.
