An Azure Service Bus was used both as the trigger for this processing, and the transport to guarantee delivery. For a bilingual client, Jon developed the Internationalisation (i18n) infrastructure for the product, and assisted in the operation of the translation effort. This required the tokenisation of all translatable terms within the application, hooking in to GitHub commit events to ship newly updated translatable terms to a third party translation platform, and updating the deployment process to obtain up-to-date translations on demand. And, as is always required for bespoke customers, integration work with external systems was required. Jon used Azure Functions (serverless code) to react to externally triggered webhook events, then synchronise data from an external API to the iDSS Cyclone database; he also developed a tool to periodically pull in iCalendar formatted events from an RSS Feed.Maintenance work on the legacy WebForms code was undertaken, and included the porting of business layer code to .NET Standard, in order that it could be used in ASP.NET Core applications, and ultimately on Linux servers. This was a very productive way of working, with the split-timezone team offering both challenges and benefits. The biggest benefit was that there was usually someone busily working on the code.Jon took responsibility for being the Scrum Master for the Development Team, but the focus was very much on being a facilitator for the rest of the team. Jon would deal with daily impediments, schedule the core Scrum meetings, and wrestle with JIRA to keep tickets under control. Jon also became the "DevOps" leader, taking responsibility for ensuring the Build System (TeamCity) and Deployment System (Octopus) ran smoothly, and integrating real-time feedback via Mailgun and also hooking into New Relic. On the development side of things--which was actually his core focus!--Jon integrated an OpenID Connect service into the company's ASP.NET WebAPI2 OWIN hosted API; implemented FluentValidation within the API; and extended the available resources provided by the API. Jon would also work on the core ASP.NET MVC4 webapps, as required. He was a very strong advocate for programming against interfaces, and providing concrete classes via Dependency Injection. However, he soon became the “go to” person within the team, with the permanent members of staff turning to him for task direction and technical guidance on implementation details. He was a “full stack” developer: coding KnockoutJS, jQuery anf TypeScript front-end code; through ASP.NET MVC and WebAPI; down to EF5 and SQL Server; all hosted on AWS. He implemented the CI system using CC.NET, and helped develop the in-house deployment tool. At the end of the initial phase, the team delivered the project – www.trimble-terraflex.com.Jon was retained for the second phase of the project, which kicked off once the “proof of viability” TerraFlex project had been shown to be successful. Phase 2 was to widen the scope, and to enlarge the team to include team members in Colorado, and Germany, and Chennai. This larger, geographically and time-zone- dispersed team needed to rely more on communication tools such as Google Hangouts for daily stand-ups, wikis, JIRA and so on.Jon was assigned to the “API Team,” responsible for implementing the message-based, REST API for the new UI, and external clients. This was done using ServiceStack as the API host; EF6 Code First (targetting a PostreSQL backend), including Migrations for deployment. Jon became responsible for integrating the various disparate system that were needed for the whole solutions. This phase of the project resulted in www.TrimbleInSphere.com. As a remote worker, Jon received excellent feedback from the Trimble Software Development Manager, including the comment that he “communicated very well and contributed most effectively.” Show less
