About Jon Park

Currently seeking new contract and freelance opportunities. Open to part-time or permanent roles too.I'm a JavaScript developer with strong general front end skills. I focus in React, but I've also worked with Vue and Angular. I would like to spend more time with Svelte and SvelteKit.I use Node and NextJS on the server side, but have also been a Laravel developer for several years. I particularly enjoy bringing the strengths of each to my work in the others. Node code can be well-defined and structured, and Laravel can be event-driven and compartmentalised.I'm very comfortable filling out any gaps in a development team. I can move between front end development, server-side, project management, UX, and architectural and planning positions. I've lead development teams and even built a couple.

  • Dwp Digital
    Front End Web Developer (Contract)
    Dwp Digital Aug 2016 - Aug 2017
    Leeds, United Kingdom
Contracted as a Front End Web Developer and assigned to support individual service teams.Working with the Access to Work service team, I supported Java application developers with front end assets written using the Freemarker template engine. I was with the team as the service progressed through the private and public Beta phases, whilst meeting strict accessibility requirements.Later, I worked in support of the Prove Your Identity service team under the wider Universal Credit group. Here I worked as a NodeJS developer connecting front end templates with a series of back-end microservices. The service was designed to accept a session handover from the central Universal Credit system, run our own process, and then hand the session back. We managed to implement a complete end-to-end journey by the time my contract came to an end, whilst being adaptable enough to manage changes to the handover processes and the user journey itself. In addition to these duties, I acted as a mentor to associate level front end developers on the DWP's permanent staff.

Established a digital department for a branding and marketing agency with large, international clients. My initial responsibilities involved managing an internationally-distributed 3rd party development team and the transfer of projects to an internal team.I was responsible for laying out the groundwork for standard working practices in development, sysadmin and project management, hiring and mentoring new developers, managing their work and personal development. It was still a very hands-on role and I was responsible for filling in any gaps in the team's skill-set.
  • Kata Development
    Freelance Senior Web Developer
    Kata Development Jun 2010 - Apr 2013
    Durham, United Kingdom
I have dipped in and out of freelancing across the majority of my career. At certain points it was my sole source of income, at others it was simply for side projects to improve and maintain my skill-set.I built up and maintained a portfolio of clients from agencies to businesses. The work involved was spread across every facet of my experience. I built front-ends, Wordpress templates and PHP-based applications. I also offered hosting services and maintained a small cluster of servers to do so.
  • Happiest Limited

Happiest was a social media startup with the aim to create a social network to allow the tracking of happiness habits across people and businesses.I joined the product very early in it's lifecycle and became the main source of technical knowledge and experience for its initial stages. I saw through the initial system designs stages as technical architect and helped to develop the initial alpha and beta versions. In my later time, I focussed more on the JavaScript web application. As this was before many frameworks, a lot of this was built using disparate libraries and vanilla JavaScript code.
  • Union Room Ltd
    Senior Web Developer
Union Room Ltd Apr 2006 - Feb 2010
    Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom
This was my first agency job and I was the first developer hire for this particular company. At the time, everyone else on the team was a designer using Macromedia Studio to produce websites. I established the development practices for the company and helped to interview subsequent development team members. My day-to-day work covered both front and back-end website development, application design and development, database design and server management. I also mentored much of the team in more modern web development practices.
  • Safe Harbour Web Services (Freelance)
    Web Developer
Safe Harbour Web Services (Freelance) Nov 2005 - Apr 2006
    Hartlepool, United Kingdom
Post-university, I found it difficult to find work in the web development field that I wanted to. Because of this, I set up a simple one-stop shop for web design, development and management services. In my time I managed to build up a small portfolio of local, national and international clients which served the purpose of getting me into a more established role elsewhere. My time here was really where I established my skills. I started on the front end with simple designs and HTML/CSS builds and steadily moved back through the stack as my client's needs required. By the end I had developed several CMSes and a bespoke management application for a Dubai-based bookstore chain.
