About Jordan Mitchell
Howdy! My name is Jordan and I am a student sportswriter transitioning from the pageantry of college sports to the less-sexy world of higher education, despite coming into college wanting to be a hot-shot ESPN reporter!It's not that I don't love sports journalism. Writing game stories at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium's press box until 12:00 AM on deadline gave me such a rush, and writing impactful, genuinely human stories on athletes and sports fans in the community was incredibly fulfilling. But I have come to discover through journalism and my mentoring experiences at UT-Austin, NCAA D-I student-athletes have a tendency to be overemphasized as athletes and overlooked as students, especially those with intersectional identities. As an incoming Master's of Education student at SMU, I want to research student-athlete experiences such as stereotype threat in the classroom and role-set influence within student-athlete academic advising, in addition to serving student-athletes in some sort of support role. I also wish to pursue storytelling opportunities where I can write impactful feature articles that paint student-athletes as whole people rather than godlike sports figures.When I'm not writing for a newspaper, you can probably catch me watching live sports (baseball and volleyball are my favorites,) studying the Ancient Greek language, binge watching Star Wars with my little brother and bowling with the bumpers on!
