Practitioner working in Higher Education with a specialism of supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. I have held multiple roles working with disabilities. I began working as a Classroom Support Assistant. This involved helping the class teacher in preparation and deliverance of lessons, as well as looking after the health and well-being of the students in the classroom. An additional role I held with the school was a Parent Champion. In this role, I researched and assessed what parents wanted from the school. I project managed the Parent Champion intervention by providing resources, information and training workshops for parents and carers in relation to different aspects of SEND and child development. I then created workshops in order to inform and educate on different aspects of a child’s development and well-being. I would also signpost families to other services that were available to best support their child’s needs.After this I worked within Doncaster Council for three years as the Independent Travel Training Coordinator. In this role, I was responsible for developing, implementing and leading an Independent Travel Training (ITT) program for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The aim of the program is to develop independent living skills that will allow a young person with SEND to make an independent journey from their home to a place of education in a morning and the return journey in an afternoon. I then moved to DN Colleges Group where I initially worked as an Academic Enhancement Tutor at University Campus Doncaster. Within this role, I provided holistic support to Higher Education students by looking, alongside the student, at their strengths and weaknesses regarding their academic skills. To best support the students, I hold regular one-to-one tutorials with them and look at different facets of academia – including, but not limited to, critical writing and thinking, essay structure, presentation skills, understanding assignment briefs and interpreting feedback. In addition to this, I delivered workshops on different aspects of academic skills as well as digital skills and wellbeing sessions.I am now a HE Lecturer, delivering degree courses in Children's Learning and Development, Supporting SEND, and Early Childhood Studies across both sites within DN Colleges Group. This includes delivering lectures, tutorials and academic support to cohorts of students, as well as supporting students 1:1 when required.
