My role involves the development of active pharmaceutical ingredients with a focus on the scale up of synthetic procedures up to kilogram scales for the preparation of APIs to fit with customer requirements and to cGMP standards.

The main focus of my work has been to explore the chemical reactivity of ditopic carbanionic N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) towards a series of main-group element reagents. My research is focused on synthesising functional materials with aim activating small molecules such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide by using main-group elements. I also have a strong interest in using NHCs for the stabilisation and isolation conventionally unstable species.

Inorganic Chemistry Teaching Laboratory

Teaching second and third year undergraduates synthetic inorganic chemistry including the use of a Schlenk line for the manipulation of air and moisture sensitive compounds. Teaching of spectroscopic techniques such as infrared and raman spectroscopy for sample characterisation.

I have provided topic specific tutorials and classes to small groups (2 students per tutorial and 4 students per class), organising tutorial work and marking written work along with general classes to cover example questions in larger groups to ensure all students have a full understanding of each topic in preparation for end of year examinations.

As part of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst group within the Light Duty Diesel section of the Emission Control Technologies, I worked on a number projects which involved the systematic preparation of a range of diesel oxidation catalysts. This process involved washcoat preparation followed by application to the catalyst support and then samples were tested for their catalytic activity.
