Efforts relate to the development of a novel approach to modeling and optimizing surfacing events (time and location) for unmanned underwater vehicles. A significant contribution is our derivation of novel theory to model information degradation as a function of position uncertainty.− Serving as PI and an SME on sub-sea multi-agent collaboration. Efforts relate to the development of behaviors, adaptive tasking and scheduling of agents for collaborative search, navigation, and communication. − Serving as an SME and group lead on sub-sea sensor networks. Efforts relate to the modeling and incorporation of environmental effects on sensing performance. − Serving as an SME on in-stride decision making. Efforts relate to the optimal allocation of finite resources and decisions based on local perception. Decisions are based on episodic training in various environments with variable false-alarm probability.

Fully funded assistantship via Office of Naval Research grant and Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) fellowship.Theoretical research:− Optimal, data-driven control of mobile sub-sea sensors tracking multiple mobileacoustic sources.− Advance the use of finite-set statistics for multitarget tracking by deriving an efficient solution to an information gain reward metric for tracking multiple mobile acoustic sources.− Develop an approach to remove ambiguity in closely-spaced acoustic sources.− Performed research on sub-sea autonomy in collaboration with the Naval Research Laboratoryand the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City.Applied work:− Led the rapid prototyping of electronics and software for an unmanned underwater vehicle.− Plan, coordinate, and conduct at-sea experiments to validate vehicle operation and autonomy.− Design and integrate in-house electronics for a small hulled vehicle.− Conduct acoustic frequency spectrum analysis of maritime vessels to determine targetfrequency band for passive tracking while minimizing own-ship noise interference.− Implemented algorithm to acoustically detect and estimate surface vehicle trajectories for guidance.

The focus of this research was on thermal lysis of viruses on cellulose-based microfluidic devices. In particular, we implemented a thermal control system such that temperature remained within half a degree of the target temperature. Direct measurements would contaminate the sample and our controller was based on an optimal estimator. Experiments were used to validate and refine our approach.
