About Jorge Jimenez

Jorge Jimenez received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL, USA in 2017, and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA in 2021. During his Ph.D., Jorge was a graduate research assistant at the Virginia Tech Center for Marine Autonomy and Robotics, where he designed electronics and developed software for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). He also contributed algorithms for optimal trajectories for AUVs tasked with tracking multiple targets. After receiving his Ph.D., he became an autonomy research engineer and principal investigator for multiple efforts at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Panama City, FL. In 2024, Jorge joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as a senior autonomy engineer in the maritime operations group. His interests lie in the application of novel and established approaches to improve existing technologies and address previously unsolved problems in the domain of autonomy, robotics, and planning algorithms. He has authored 13 publications in refereed journals and conferences, including in IEEE Oceanic Engineering and the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. His contributions are both, theoretical and practical; methods are rigorously demonstrated with mathematical proofs, experiments with autonomous assets, and high-fidelity simulations.

Listed skills include Matlab, Pspice, Agilent Ads, Simulink, and 25 others.

Research Engineer

Panama City, Florida, United States

− Serving as Principal Investigator (PI) and Subject Matter Expert (SME) on optimal localization behaviors. Efforts relate to the development of a novel approach to modeling and optimizing surfacing events (time and location) for unmanned underwater vehicles. A significant contribution is our derivation of novel theory to model information degradation as a function of position uncertainty.− Serving as PI and an SME on sub-sea multi-agent collaboration. Efforts relate to the development of behaviors, adaptive tasking and scheduling of agents for collaborative search, navigation, and communication. − Serving as an SME and group lead on sub-sea sensor networks. Efforts relate to the modeling and incorporation of environmental effects on sensing performance. − Serving as an SME on in-stride decision making. Efforts relate to the optimal allocation of finite resources and decisions based on local perception. Decisions are based on episodic training in various environments with variable false-alarm probability.

Graduate Research Assistant

Blacksburg, Virginia

Fully funded assistantship via Office of Naval Research grant and Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) fellowship.Theoretical research:− Optimal, data-driven control of mobile sub-sea sensors tracking multiple mobileacoustic sources.− Advance the use of finite-set statistics for multitarget tracking by deriving an efficient solution to an information gain reward metric for tracking multiple mobile acoustic sources.− Develop an approach to remove ambiguity in closely-spaced acoustic sources.− Performed research on sub-sea autonomy in collaboration with the Naval Research Laboratoryand the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City.Applied work:− Led the rapid prototyping of electronics and software for an unmanned underwater vehicle.− Plan, coordinate, and conduct at-sea experiments to validate vehicle operation and autonomy.− Design and integrate in-house electronics for a small hulled vehicle.− Conduct acoustic frequency spectrum analysis of maritime vessels to determine targetfrequency band for passive tracking while minimizing own-ship noise interference.− Implemented algorithm to acoustically detect and estimate surface vehicle trajectories for guidance.

Aug 2017 - Dec 2021

Research Assistant

Boca Raton

The focus of this research was on thermal lysis of viruses on cellulose-based microfluidic devices. In particular, we implemented a thermal control system such that temperature remained within half a degree of the target temperature. Direct measurements would contaminate the sample and our controller was based on an optimal estimator. Experiments were used to validate and refine our approach.

Aug 2016 - May 2017

Research Assistant

Boca Raton

Research into computationally efficient approaches to collision avoidance by unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with optical sensors. Tasking related to the implementation of a reactionary algorithm based on the 'looming' effect, i.e., the relative change in perceived object dimensions.

Mar 2016 - May 2017

Teaching Assistant

Boca Raton

Give lectures in analog electronics as well as being responsible for coordinating, demonstrating and overseeing all lab assignments.

Jun 2016 - Jul 2016
