About Jo Salmon

* Physical activity is an essential health behaviour from early childhood to older adulthood. I spent 12+ years working in the fitness industry and 25+ years in research focused on understanding and developing strategies to support all people in the population move more for health, social, and environmental benefits. My research priority is developing and testing effective ways to support children and adolescents to sit less and move more. * In 2008, I developed the TransformUs school-based program. This award winning evidence-based program facilitates students' movement across the school day by creating supportive classroom and school physical environments and working with teachers to deliver active pedagogy in the classroom. It has been shown to benefit children's physical activity, wellbeing and classroom engagement. TransformUs is available in primary and secondary schools across Australia as well in schools for children with additional needs and is currently reaching over 670 schools. * In 2019, I founded the Asia Pacific Society for Physical Activity (ASPA) to advance connections between research, policy and practice to achieve a more active population in the region. * I am passionate about working with government and philanthropists to guide evidence-based initiatives for sustained positive social impact.Academic achievements:* I have been externally funded by research fellowships for 25 years. I currently hold a NHMRC Level 2 Investigator Grant and have been a Chief Investigator on over 36 nationally funded research projects and 14 international projects worth more than $28.8 million. I have (co-)supervised 26 PhD students to completion and 14 postdoctoral fellows. I have published over 470 peer reviewed papers and book chapters, and for the past 9 years have been named a Clarivate Highly Cited researcher (in the top 1% most cited authors in the world for my subject field). I am past President and Fellow of the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity; received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (ISBM) in 2023 in recognition of distinguished scholarly contributions to the science of behavioral medicine across a productive career; received the 2021 Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) Research Leadership Award for outstanding leadership in research and scholarly activity in the field of sedentary behaviour; and am a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
