Of course, natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes can’t be reduced or eliminated, but the Risk Manager can assist in determining ways to make buildings stronger in order to be better able to withstand these calamities when they do strike. Risk managers specialize in identifying potential causes of accidents or loss, recommending and implementing preventive measures, and devising plans to minimize costs and damage should a loss occur, including the purchase of insurance. Coordinate loss control systems for organizations and businesses which may include disaster recovery plans and emergency evacuations. Risk managers are also involved in the purchase of insurance programs, manage claims and loss control activities, manage relationships with third party service providers including brokers and insurers, prepare loss analyses and budgets, identify exposures, recommend solutions, implement approved programs, promote loss prevention, update and monitor compliance with insurance procedures and manage safety/risk management manuals. Risk Managers design and implement an overall risk management process for the organization, manage the process of identifying and assessing the risks affecting the business, oversee, and in some areas implement, the plan of risk control actions such as purchase of insurance or other risk financing options, health and safety measures, liaison with regulators, business continuity plan; monitor, evaluate and challenge the organization’s success in managing its risks, organize appropriate risk reporting, internally and externally. Loss control is the ability to identify the potential for loss which can occur at any particular property or business. It starts with common sense and then uses information gathered from past losses to enable an insurer to predict or foresee potential claims against the policy and encompasses every line of insurance underwriting written today. In short, it is the ability to foresee problems that could hurt an insurance company. Loss control is a very specialized business that utilizes many technical references as a guide.
