Somos El Poder is a national institute dedicated to improving fundraising at Latinx-focused nonprofits. The vision of Somos El Poder is to improve the lives and influence of the Latinx population in the US today. We will do this through helping Latinx-focused nonprofits improve their fundraising operations. SEP provides classes, annual conferences (post-pandemic) and other professional development opportunities that are accessible to Latinx-focused nonprofits and Latinx fundraising professionals. In addition, we work to promote Development as a career to Latinx students at the high school and collegiate level.

Recruited authors, edited encyclopedia entries for style and content, and wrote original entries for a 21-volume encyclopedia.

I helped to develop two original surveys for various projects directed by Professor Victor Rios, including survey on deviance for undergraduate students in introductory Sociology course, and an evaluation survey administered to students involved in a youth program sponsored by the Santa Barbara School District. I generated descriptive statistics of student responses for the youth survey, as well as some nonparametric tests to determine the current impact of the intervention program on school attachment and parental attachment as part of a status report submitted to the Santa Barbara School District.

I supervised writer/editor staff, organization/administrative staff, and temporary workers and interns (up to a maximum of nine staff members). I hired four staff members, including three writer/editors and one project coordinator. I developed a new administrative position (project coordinator), and outlined the chain of tasks to arrange and record contracts, manage contributor information, and track the flow of encyclopedia entries. I developed and revised contributor guidelines for crafting capsules and sidebars. I coordinated several recruitment efforts using author contacts mined from history, social science, and area/ethnic studies department websites. I developed new contracts and compensation packages to encourage recruitment of contributors. I tracked weekly flow of encyclopedia entries at each stage of the editing process, and directed audits of eras as necessary. I conducted conferences with era editors, and communicated with individual era editors as necessary to determine ways to improve flow of entries through the editing process.
