About Joseff Smith

🏰 Hi, I’m Joe. I am an assistant at Apollo Art Auctions, a company specialising in the sale of medieval and ancient art and objects. Though our items come from all over the world, we (and I) are/am based in central London.🎓 In August 2022 I completed my MA in Medieval Studies, undertaking ground-breaking study in fields such as object analysis, fantasy writing, animal history, and ecclesiastical history. Most of my work focused on the European sphere but ranged widely in date from pre-first millennium through to the early Tudor period.📚 Prior to starting my Master’s degree, I completed my undergraduate in History. My final year cemented my strong interest in Welsh history, but over my three years at Birmingham my studies extended through dozens of historical periods across a huge breadth of the world. My dissertation won the RHC Davis Prize for Medieval History and I received amongst the highest marks in my 200+ person year group.

  • The Wallace Collection
    Security Team Member
The Wallace Collection Sep 2023 - Apr 2024
    London Area, United Kingdom
    • Required to monitor the building and exhibits for tampering or water leaks with a high degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail. • Competing responsibilities include controlling the alarm systems and the CCTV, all of which require me to apply strong IT skills. • The security control room is the primary point of contact for visitor enquiries both via email and on the phone. This has allowed me to develop my customer service skills in a heritage environment.• Good communication within the security team and between our team and the rest of the museum staff is absolutely essential. • Regular patrols are required to be conducted throughout the shift. During the day this leads to interacting with members of the public, whereupon I become a visible representative of the Wallace Collection and am required to behave appropriately.
  • Carmarthenshire County Council
    Interpretation Assistant And Researcher
Carmarthenshire County Council Jan 2023 - Sep 2023
    Parc Howard Museum
    • Jointly responsible for re-planning the main exhibition space within the museum, implementing necessary design changes from plans that had been made prior to me joining the team.• Responsible for researching the content and drafting the text of the new interpretation panels within the re-designed exhibition space.• Responsible for finding suitable images for use on interpretation panels throughout the main exhibition and assuring that they were properly cleared of copyright.• Responsible for text and pictures on further interpretation panelling throughout the museum, including on the main staircase and in the foyer.
  • Llanelli Community Heritage
    Volunteer Researcher
Llanelli Community Heritage Oct 2022 - Sep 2023
    Llanelli, Wales, United Kingdom
    • Currently leading a team of volunteers investigating the town of Llanelli’s medieval religious institutions, with the aim of publishing a paper upon completion. This project relies heavily on my primary source analysis skills but also my ability to support and work with my volunteering team. • Had the opportunity to host and participate in lectures and seminars with members of the public. The most recent was well attended and resulted in some extremely encouraging feedback.• Have worked with objects such as rare books and antique maps that are incredibly fragile, and thus have knowledge of the correct approach for handling important historical objects.
  • Furnace Rugby Club
    Bartender
Furnace Rugby Club Jul 2021 - Jun 2023
    Llanelli
    • I am responsible for opening and closing the bar in a responsible and planned manner without supervision from superiors, as well as serving patrons and ordering and keeping inventory well-stocked and presentable when displayed front-of-house. • The role requires excellent interpersonal skills when communicating with customers in an environment where the visitor experience is a key priority, but communication also is also paramount within the bar team to ensure objectives are met and standards upheld.
  • Uob Pantomime Society
Social Media Manager And Events Coordinator
Uob Pantomime Society Apr 2020 - Aug 2022
    Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
    • Volunteer role which displays my ability to quickly learn and successfully apply new skills.• Despite having never worked in social media prior to taking the role, the social media engagement doubled under my control; for example, the Instagram following rose from low-200's to around 500. • The membership retainment rate of the society in general also increased dramatically, partially thanks to a major increase in the frequency of events organised by me in comparison to my predecessors. As such, the role required excellent ability to negotiate and communicate both internally with more senior members and externally with venues and contacts. • The yearly earnings of the society quadrupled under the committee of which I was an integral part; whilst many university societies failed to recover from COVID, Panto instead emerged stronger than ever.
  • University Of Birmingham Guild Of Students
    Security Assistant
University Of Birmingham Guild Of Students Oct 2019 - Jun 2022
    Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
    • Worked as a leading member of a large team during the bi-weekly club nights to ensure the safety of staff and patrons.• I was also responsible, whether independently or as part of a two-person team, for locking up the large building after closing on non-club nights of the week.
