The Allianz Visiting Professorship for Islamic and Jewish studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich was established after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York and Washington, and the first visiting professor arrived during the summer of 2003. The aim of this endowed chair is to help foster dialogue between cultures and to further understanding of Islamic and Jewish culture. The primary reason for Allianz's engagement in this field was the conviction that a great number of current international conflicts are exacerbated by an insufficient understanding of cultural differences.The visiting professorship is intended as a forum for visiting professors with an interest in intercultural dialogue beyond the confines of university life. In general, a professor for Jewish and a professor for Islamic Studies will take turns giving lectures for one semester each. Cooperation partners are the Gesellschaft der Freunde Islamischer Kunst und Kultur e.V. (Society of Friends of Islamic Art and Culture) and the Freundeskreis des Lehrstuhls für Jüdische Geschichte und Kultur e.V. (Friends of the Chair of Jewish History and Culture).
