The Technical Services Department consists of four chemists tasked with maximizing the profitability of analytical instrumentation at AIT Laboratories. This involves minimizing the downtime of instruments such as HPLC, UPLC, MS/MS, MS-ToF, GC-FID and GC-MS through effective preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and solving problems as they occur, and ensuring regulatory compliance of the instrumentation. One of the most important needs to accomplish this is the effective sharing of information. We spent several months improving the existing infrastructure to enhance the communication of current instrument status, problems/fixes, and spares inventory as well as the tracking of service tickets and usage of resources. I was trained and/or certified to perform PMs on Waters Alliance and Acquity, Agilent 1100 and 1200 LC systems, and Waters TQD, Quattro Premier, and Quattro Micro MS systems.

I developed LCMS/MS assays for various drugs using the Waters Acquity UPLC, Waters TQD MS/MS, and Sciex 3200/3200 Q-Trap MS/MS. I also assisted with evaluating new technologies and techniques for our lab and have been involved in developing methods using liquid handling devices such as the Tomtec Quadra 96.A major project was serving as Scientific Liaison for the ASCENT Opiates Project with Indigo Biosystems, during which I worked with Amy Gilchriest and Justin Grimes (Indigo) to configure the product for our needs and to perform validation testing. The implementation of the product led to a ~33% reduction in workload for the assay, even without utilizing the review-by-exception possibilities it was capable of.

I managed a group responsible for confirming non-urine samples for presence of screened drugs using HPLC, GCMS, LCMS, UPLC-MS/MS instrumentation. We decreased average turn-around-time from 12 days to 6 days during my tenure by addressing bottlenecks in the process using employee suggestions.We also decreased the data error rate from >50% of batches analyzed to less than 10% thanks to a feedback loop and targeted training for analysts. Our department was merged in Dec 2009 with another department, so I returned to my previous position in R&D/Technical Services.

I developed GCMS, HPLC and LCMS/MS assays for various drugs using the Agilent 5973 GCMS, Waters Alliance 2695 HPLC, Waters Acquity UPLC, Waters TQD MS/MS, Waters Quattro Micro MS/MS, Agilent 1200 HPLC, Shimadzu Prominence HPLC and Sciex 3200/3200 Q-Trap MS/MS. I also assisted with evaluating new technologies and techniques for the lab, was instrumental in developing technical training for confirmations chemists, and was a primary troubleshooter for lab assay issues. I left this position when offered the opportunity to manage the Forensic Confirmations Department.

I performed batching, aliquotting, and extractions for blood confirmations testing in a toxicology lab. I operated and analyzed/certified data from HPLC-UV, LCMS, GCMS, LC-ToF-MS and LCMS/MS. I also performed troubleshooting and repair on instrumentation. As a part of these duties I also served as lead chemist and Workflow Coordinator for Confirmations Dept.
