Uas Traffic Management Lead
CurrentWorking with a great team and across organizations to make commercial and public Beyond Visual-Line-of-Sight drone operations routine, safe, and extensible.
Chief Technologist, Aviation Systems Division
CurrentNASA Ames Research Center is the home to a prolific Air Traffic Management research organization. The Aviation Systems Division is a key hub for that research that continually pushes the boundaries of managing air traffic. As the Chief Technologist, my role is to ensure that the software technology we are developing supports the various Projects, NASA Centers, and external partners in the work. I assist our multiple development teams in optimizing their processes, shredding red tape, and building the best software possible to meet current and future mission needs. In addition to modernizing our processes, I also make new connections for the Aviation Systems Division within NASA, with other government agencies, and industry partners.
Chief Engineer, Atm-X Project
The ATM-eXploration Project contains a portfolio of activities focused on advancing the National Airspace System (NAS). Each of the four Subprojects incorporates elements of automation, collaboration, data-driven decision making, and enabling new entrants to the NAS. My role as Chief Engineer is to aid our talented teams in pushing the boundaries in measurable, impactful ways.
Chief Engineer, Utm Project
NASA Ames was at the forefront in recognizing the coming wave of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and the need for a system to manage this new traffic. Thus was born UAS Traffic Management (UTM). When this effort was made an official research effort, I was asked to take the role of Technical Lead. When UTM graduated to a full NASA Project, I was asked to continue as Chief Engineer. As a team we have merged NASA's decades of Air Traffic Management institutional knowledge with leading edge Silicon Valley approaches to develop a completely new way to think about managing the airspace. With the help of industry, we are building out concepts, simulating them, flying them, and scaling them out for testing in conjunction with partners. Paving the way to safe, scalable, efficient, fair access to the airspace for small UAS.In this effort I help our various technical teams stay connected and moving forward toward a common goal. It is an amazing opportunity to work with a wide array of experts in aviation, communications, cybersecurity, software development, human factors, systems engineering, simulations, and many other disciplines. This Project truly leverages the talents and experience of NASA's aeronautics team across multiple NASA Centers and I am proud to be a part of it.Along the way on UTM our software team won the 2019 NASA Software of the Year award for code that was transferred to the FAA and used to prep our partners for flight tests. As a team we have pushed the bounds on the use of Amazon Web Services for research activities at NASA Ames.
Research Aerospace Engineer
Upon joining NASA in 2007, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of research efforts. My work generally focused on large scale optimization, data exchanges, and general aviation in various combinations at various times. All work was under the umbrella of Air Traffic Management. NASA Ames Research Center is an international hub for such work. Some of my projects:* Traffic Flow Management Optimization: Implemented an efficient, parallel approach to minimizing the overall delay in the National Airspace System. This achievement allowed for several new areas of research by removing previous computational barriers in simulations of traffic.* Standards-compliant Data Service: Worked directly with the FAA to modernize the delivery of important air traffic information. Client systems of the FAA, airlines, and researchers can use the system to access previously difficult-to-obtain data to improve decision-making.* Mobile-platform Situational Awareness Tool for Pilots: Developed a novel system for collecting, storing, delivering, and visualizing important data for general aviation pilots in Alaska. Data previously inaccessible en route will be delivered and visualized by pilots to make safer decisions in harsh, remote conditions.
Founder
