I’m the Head of Strategic Portfolio Impact at the LEGO Foundation, where we want to change how adults see and interact with children at home and in the classroom. Growing up Dublin I usually got into trouble for ‘answering back’. That roughly translates to ‘stop questioning how things are done’. Thankfully I’ve not only managed to turn questioning things into a career, but I also have a job where I promotes children being capable and curious learners – ‘answering back’ is welcome! My role at the LEGO Foundation combines interests and skills that I’ve developed over the last 20 years. I started my career as an evaluator and have worked on everything from youth justice in the UK to humanitarian responses in Pakistan, from grassroots organisations to funds spending a over USD 1 billion every year. The goal has always been the same: can we do it even better, for even more people? Along the way I’ve become interested in how funders like the LEGO Foundation can design and deliver their grant making portfolios to make their impact even bigger. And that also means thinking about how we can use data, knowledge, and lessons so individuals and teams at all levels can make better decisions.
