About Joseph Hicks
I have always had an interest in STEM in general, which led me to go to CU Boulder to study chemical/biological engineering. I eventually decided that this field was not for me, and transitioned into a landscaping job in 2018 to take advantage of my horticultural skills.During my time landscaping, I saved up money with the intent to eventually go back to school in some form. I had initially expected to go to school for horticulture, but plans change, of course.In the past year, I have reignited my interest in computer science from my time at CU by learning Python and SQL in my free time. This eventually led me to discover the field of machine learning, which is the main reason I decided to pursue a career in data science in the first place. I really enjoy how quickly the technology is advancing and I hope I can find a career that would allow me to be a part of this ever-changing field.To that end, I bit the bullet this year and decided to change careers by taking a "coding bootcamp" (a.k.a. the Data Science Immersive) through General Assembly. It has been an arduous journey so far, considering the 60+ hour work weeks, but I've stuck with the program so far and have been performing well!Outside of work, my main interests are gardening and being outdoors in general. I also enjoy playing saxophone and cooking when free time permits.

I work on a team that uses SQL, R, Python and C# to manage and create thousands of custom reports for a wide variety of retail clients. I also use R and Python to create new algorithms that will leverage the data available to us to improve report accuracy and introduce new features.
