Director Of Program Management North American Customer Service (Through May 2014)

Current

Old Tappan, New Jersey

In this role, I direct, lead, and track all North American Customer Service Projects, Goals and Objectives, ensuring that requirements are achieved on a timely basis within budgeted costs. In order to ensure complete oversight, control, and accountability, I established and implemented a tracking mechanism to ensure that all goals and objectives are aligned with principles, have measurable results, and remain on track throughout the planning and delivery phases. One of the most important aspects of this role is my ability to plan ahead, often with incomplete and even disparate processes, and I have gained a strong ability to be very proactive, assess issues, identify and recommend solutions, and react and respond quickly in this changing, deadline-driven, and dynamic work environment. This role also necessitates a strong level of coordination and collaboration across many areas, and I have to lead by example, without authority in many cases, in order to acquire information to develop multi-year technology plans and annual budgets, develop business continuity plans, and track and report monthly expenses vs. budget. The information I gather is critical as a starting point in establishing and integrating PMO measures, metrics, thresholds, and targets to drive performance in alignment with IT and business strategies, including risk and operational management metrics. I manage the end-to-end oversight of business and corporate initiatives, from concept to delivery, ensuring execution of business requirements, training, procedures, workflow redesigns and implementation schedules.I also enjoy the opportunity to chair the North American Customer Service Operating Committee, where we brainstorm new ideas to ensure a quality-focused culture, foster mutually supportive relationships, and develop quality strategies that will help to drive the adoption of continued best practices and quality methodologies.

Mar 2011 - Present

Manager Of Royalty Operations

Upper Saddle River, New Jersey

In this position, I maintained complete accountability for planning/production of financially accurate and timely periodic royalty statements with a staff of 2 Supervisors and 10 Royalty Analysts, serving as primary liaison with authors, literary agents and business groups to ensure service level satisfaction and a positive department image. This department was responsible for royalty statement disbursements of $360MM/yr and non-statement disbursements in excess of $125MM/yr, requiring the implementation and management of strict control, compliance and oversight. I spearheaded a project that utilized "new" technology including a web-based Royalty Inquiry Tracking System, which significantly improved automation, reduced duplicate processes, and ensured accuracy. I also made sure to incorporate technical and business teams in the design and development phases. I utilized persuasive communication skills to develop and leverage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, acting as subject matter expert for complex queries and efficient issue resolution. I also worked collaboratively with internal teams to brainstorm, build and maintain more effective processes for forecasting accuracy, ensuring comprehensive financial projections for future royalty needs. I gained expertise working with MS Project to successfully integrate newly acquired businesses including Macmillan Publishing, Addison-Wesley Longman, AGS and Harcourt, assigning resources, tracking issues and maintaining the plan, resulting in a seamless transition and zero negative client impact. I enjoyed the staff development aspects as well, including the opportunity to select, hire, mentor, and train a diverse staff in order to maximize employee performance, improve morale, and deliver consistent top-level service and results.I was also fortunate to travel extensively to the UK and Australia to provide presentations and demonstrations of the Pearson Education Royalty Accounting System.

Feb 2001 - Feb 2011

School Team Leader Of Royalty Operations

Upper Saddle River, New Jersey

The education industry is so well connected to publishing, and in fact, this area represents a very large portion of a company's profits and client base. As School Team Leader of Royalty Operations, I managed, mentored, and led a team of four professional accountants in the end-to-end preparation and presentation of royalty statements to the School Group’s authors, ensuring 100% accuracy within tight deadlines. In order to maintain company’s strong operational and technical competence in royalty accounting, I planned and drove royalty-related functions, and assumed a leadership role for all functions that supported the royalty processes, resulting in accurate and timely accounting for expense in financial statements in accordance with compliance requirements.I enjoyed the ability to mentor and help my staff grow in their professional development goals, and I worked hard to set achievable yet aggressive objectives and development plans, deliver timely performance reviews, and ensure on-going communication and career feedback.

Jan 1994 - Jan 2001

Supervisor Of Royalty Accounting

New York, New York

If someone had asked me, back in 1986, if I envisioned that my career would remain in the publishing industry on a long-term basis, I am not sure what I would have replied. Looking back, I realize that everything I learned in this earlier job are still skills that I use in my current position. Of course I have developed expertise in all of the main areas over the years, but looking back, these earlier positions had a great impact on the importance of managing projects and processes from beginning to end, as well as accepting the responsibilities of every role I took on. As Supervisor of Royalty Accounting, I maintained 100% accountability throughout the monthly closing process, preparing account analysis, reconciling royalty accounts and supervising the statement preparation and approval process. My financial abilities were considerably strengthened throughout my tenure at Macmillan Publishing Company, as I was tasked to prepare and analyze monthly royalty calculations for budget, forecast and actual reporting, identify any variances and/or fluctuations, and effectively resolve any pending issues. My role encompassed the end-to-end management and delivery of all financial- and accounting-related royalty expense matters, ensuring royalty assets and liabilities were presented in accordance with company regulations as well as federal compliance. In order to ensure the timely analysis, submission, and accuracy of the monthly close process, I added value in every step, including preparation, review, approval of related entries, and efficient issue resolution within a very fast-paced environment.
