Local residential hardwood flooring contractor. In early 2018, I received a medical diagnosis rendering me disabled and unable to work. I spent what time I could at home, trying to build/manage this flooring business while pursuing a degree in occupational safety and health. With my medical status, I subcontracted out all the work. I mostly took a loss or barely broke even, but I was able to keep a few guys working full time. So I learned a lot of management skills during this time. Unfortunately, once I actually began to turn a profit covid hit in 2020. As a small business, that decimated me and I eventually let go and got out that fall. For me, the silver lining was a ton of irreplaceable knowledge and experience that I gained. Working in the tube fabrication department, I operated a laser cutter. The machine cut metal tubing to a designated spec depending on demand. Once the orders were fulfilled I facilitated the product to the welding department. Daily duties included: maintaining production demand • fluid team communication • tool change • machine changeover • general maintenance and clean-up • machine inspections • Quality spec checksSoon after taking this job I began to become very sick. Visiting several doctors, I didn't get a significant answer until early 2018. I received a diagnosis that rendered me medically disabled and unfit for work. The state of Alabama put me on SSDI in February 2018. In the same month, my father was diagnosed with lung cancer and I took care of him until he passed away in May 2018

I received my A.S. in Process Technology (Chemical Process Operations) in 2015 and immediately went to work for the chemical plant Indorama Ventures AlphaPet Inc. They are world class leaders of manufacturing PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) with more than 20 PET production plants across five continents. The PET pellets produced are sold to major customers like Coca-Cola, where they turn the pellets into plastic water bottles.I was hired into the process as an FTR Chem 1 operator (Recycling). My responsibilities included: safe start up and shutdown of plant equipment • forklift operation • high temperature screen changes • fluid radio communication with all process operators, control room, supervisors, and rail yard • direct recycle trucks to hopper and secure flake delivery • control raw material efficiencies by following SOP's and product recipes • monitor trends on FTR control screens • monitor and maintain FTR pressure and temperatures • act accordingly if measurements fall out of spec • perform minor maintenance activities to ensure efficient operations • take an active part in all aspects of safety programs • attending group safety meetings • practice good housekeeping skillsI enjoyed the work and gained valuable field experience. The downside for me was the hours. We operated on a 12 hour rotationl swing shift ( nights,days,nights, etc.). Once my kids got older and started to play sports, I wanted more time to be involved. So, I started to seek out a job with more convenient first shift hours.
