Like many bankers, I got into banking thinking I would only stay for 2-3 years. My parents were both in banking and they met and fell in love in a banking class in Charlotte in the late 60's. My Dad was teaching the class. Classes are online now, but it was commonplace to have fellow bankers teaching the continuing education classes. My parents encouraged me to get an internship in banking while in college because they said banking was steady and I would be able to get a job out of school. I was determined to NOT work in banking, but after 9/11 when I graduated, retail banking jobs were some of the few jobs available at that time. I hate to say it, but my parents were right...I started as a teller and worked my way up to branch manager within 6 months. Over the years, I have had many roles in banking, but seriously considered quitting in 2012 after the recession. Around that time, my Uncle gave me a framed photograph of my great, great grandfather, Daniel Owen. He was the President of a Bank in South Boston, Virgina and back then, banks issued their own checks to correspondent banks, so Daniel Owen signed the $10 note dated March 15, 1907. My Uncle gave me the photo and said "you should have this because you are the last banker in the family."I obviously couldn't quit banking after that, so I kept going.... Shortly thereafter, I decided to work at First Financial Bank because the bank is big enough that I can take care of my clients. I stay at First Financial Bank because they let me take care of my clients.
