I worked in an extremely fast-paced environment, overseeing and responding to requests for information from Ministers, MPs, press and senior stakeholders, both within and outside the organisation.I worked on the Brexit trade project, which meant I liaised and worked closely with other government departments and senior stakeholders from across the sector. One of the main projects I was involved with was the Target Operating Model, which will harmonise and simplify the import of goods. I worked very closely with project managers and policy officials to gather and disseminate often very complicated pieces of information, in order to turn it into easily understandable messaging.I also contributed to briefings for parliamentary committees and high level meetings.

I was brought in to help with the A-level crisis and to implement a crisis communications plan. I successfully dealt with the first and second wave of the crisis. I handled multiple media enquiries and worked closely with senior stakeholders, including the Chief Executive who I advised how the organisation should handle the crisis. This role demonstrates how I am a proficient self-starter. On day one of the crisis, I worked remotely, not knowing the business and took over 150 media calls in my first week.

I was employed as a Media Relations Manager to foster good relations with local, regional, national and international channels. I created plans for all university activity and responded to media enquiries. The latter resulted in the university receiving an unprecedented amount of coverage, including a reach of over 3M for the announcement of the new Vice Chancellor. I was also the lead for crisis communications and put together a comprehensive plan that was adopted by the executive board. I worked with and influenced senior stakeholders and advised on media strategies. I managed two members of staff.

My remit was to contribute to the development of partner communications campaigns around priority policies, using partner channels and influence to maximise reach and impact. To maintain strong, trusting, and synergistic relationships, ensuring open dialogue and access to company owned and earned channels including digital. To manage day-to-day engagement with key external groups, gathering intelligence about their activities and issues and ensuring these are fed into campaign planning. To deliver integrated communications plans which maximise all channels. To carry out evaluation to track the impact and success of communications activities, ensuring feedback and results are captured into future planning. I also had a media incident role, meaning I coordinate all media activity during floods and major fires.

I was employed by the Department for Transport as a Media Manager at the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.My remit was to deliver informative external communications to assist the effective operation of DVSA’s services and promote the agency’s vision, priorities and policies. To provide a highly responsive reactive media handling capability, as well as proactively creating and seeding stories and developing quality ‘direct to consumer’ content, using digital and social media.Experience:• Liaising with external stakeholders in order to foster relationships and to promote the agency’s message.• Communications project management.• Working closely with government departments and Ministers.• Media monitoring and analysis.• Writing material for different channels, including social media.Achievements:• Successfully put a crisis management plan in place for the Vauxhall Zafira fire crisis.• Pitched to The One Show to have DVSA enforcement teams featured, resulting in 7M viewers.• Successfully pitched to a production company to follow driving examiners for a six-part BBC prime time series.• Promoted the work of DVSA Fraud and Integrity team by working closely with a production company for Channel 5 ‘Fraudsters’.• Promoted changes to the driving test which received widespread national media coverage, including page 2 of The Times during a busy news cycle. My team won the CIPR best public sector award for this project.

I was employed to advise the leadership and Cabinet at Derby City Council as to the strategic direction of the authority, and how to communicate policy and decisions effectively to stakeholders, including the public. A large part of my role involved early intervention in order to identify any issues that could have caused reputation damage to the authority. I was responsible for managing all communications activities that involved the cabinet and the leader’s office, including producing and implementing the media strategy and communications plan. I was responsible for signing-off press releases and statements in the absence of the leadership and managed a small team of staff. Other responsibilities included: Generating quotes, liaising, and regularly meeting with journalists to foster good relations, organising media events, including press conferences, updating social media, writing speeches and blogs, and putting crisis management plans in place.

I was employed to communicate campaigns, political vision, and policy decisions to the public, by utilising all media channels. I was the main point of contact for the press and acted as my employer’s official spokesperson. I was also responsible for all copy, press releases, blogs and updating social media feeds. I handled and responded to all media enquiries. As part of my role, I monitored media coverage in order to develop best practice. I was also employed to research given topics and to train elected members in media techniques and how to present policy in a positive manner. To rebut any negative media and to deal swiftly with any reputation damage that may arise from it.

Whilst employed in this role I was responsible for all communications that came out of a very busy political leader’s office. I was responsible for planning and implementing my employer’s media strategy and putting together short, medium- and long-term media strategies. I was responsible for all written material that came out of the office, including blogs, articles and all other copy. I was also responsible for engaging my employer with the public, by ensuring that she had a strong media presence and was invited to high profile events. A large part of this role involved me promoting my employer’s campaigns, which mainly involved behavioural change. For example: I was responsible putting together a media strategy to promote the health benefits of the traffic light system being made available on food products, which has now received government backing. I also led on a campaign to have all children tested at birth for immune-deficiency disease. These two projects saw me lobbying government and EU officials and working very close with senior stakeholders.
