I'm Department Chair and Associate Professor of English Literature and Language at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, where I teach classes on American literature, medical humanities, and critical theory. In my role as department chair, I have experience in strategic planning, change management, curriculum development, data-informed decision-making, financial management, faculty recruitment and hiring, and academic leadership.My research investigates depictions of medicine and science in nineteenth-century American literature. My book, The Perfecting of Nature: Reforming Bodies in Antebellum Literature (UNC Press, 2020), explores the connections among literature, medicine, and social reform in the antebellum United States. I have also published essays in Early American Literature, ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance, Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies, the Nathaniel Hawthorne Review, and American Literary Scholarship.
