As a M.S.c graduate in Sustainable Energy and Resource development I am keenly interested in exploring the multifaceted relationship between responsible environmental stewardship, business and governmental policy. I strongly believe that there is a symbiotic relationship between business and the environment and that proper regulation and adherence to environmental standards will lead to positive economic growth. My capstone project focused on forest carbon preservation and the climate change mitigation potential inherent within Alberta and British Columbia forests and examined the current regulatory environment that is informing and directing on the ground forest management practices. I believe that forestry operations in western Canada are currently failing to adequately protect essential climate change values and are missing out on significant economic opportunities. Progressive and informed regulatory and policy actions could potentially revitalize the forestry industry in western Canada while simultaneously protecting and conserving our forest resources and contributing to provincial and national climate change mitigation efforts. Having spent three seasons as a wild-land firefighter, and two as a tree-planter, I am keenly interested in the forestry industry and am passionate about exploring ways to increase industry responsible while maintaining financial viability.
