About Joydeep Acharya

I enjoy designing robust and reliable IoT solutions that identify and extract the right data sets and transform them to value through analytics. I have expertise in the entire IoT ecosystem - sensing, platform development, connectivity and analytics. My current focus is on unsupervised learning and statistical signal processing which ties to my original background in wireless communications. I am the author of 40+ academic publications and issued patents. I was the primary author of a book on Heterogeneous Networks in LTE-Advanced which was published by John Wiley in 2014. I enjoy mentoring and have lead and managed R&D teams. I really cherish the feeling of working as a team and collectively realize a common goal with unique contributions from every member. I have long experience in customer co-creation, working with product and engineering divisions to create technical solutions for business problems. I have participated and contributed in various standard organizations such as 3GPP, OpenFog, IIC and ISA-99.

  • Hitachi America Ltd.
    Sr. Manager
Hitachi America Ltd. Mar 2021 - Present
    United States
  • Hitachi America, Ltd.
    Senior Solutions Architect
Hitachi America, Ltd. Apr 2018 - Mar 2022
    Santa Clara
I manage a team of researchers and developers who contribute to Hitachi’s IIoT R&D portfolio with special focus on smart manufacturing and transportation. Our work to enhance Hitachi’s Lumada IoT platform has been favorably rated by market analysts such as Forrester. We are developing end-to-end IoT solutions by combining OT domain knowledge with sensing technology, IoT platform development, connectivity and analytics/machine learning. I feel excited about designing robust and reliable IoT solutions that can identify the right data to analyze and then to transform this data into value through analytics.
  • Hitachi America, Ltd.
    Solutions Architect
Hitachi America, Ltd. Apr 2015 - Apr 2018
    Santa Clara
I architected end-to-end IIoT solutions to optimize manufacturing shop floor operations such as traceability, machine condition monitoring, predictive maintenance and production scheduling optimization by analysis of joint sensor, PLC, MES and ERP data. I have lead PoCs and customer engagement in factories in US, Japan and UK and have firsthand experience about the maintenance, production scheduling, supply chain, sales and operations and inventory management issues. I was responsible for developing reliable data transmission and connectivity algorithms for smart transmission applications (connected car, railways, trucks) based on my previous work in telecom networks (3G, LTE) and worked with business divisions for solution delivery. I also was an active member of OpenFog Consortium, Communications WG in the context of smart transportation.Prior to expanding my focus to IoT, I was the main R&D lead in a cross-functional team of R&D, business development, product management, engineering and sales to offer telecom network analytics and service assurance targeting telecom and cable operators. Combining machine leaning with telco domain knowledge we developed real-time video QoE monitoring and root-cause analysis tools for poor QoE.
  • Hitachi America, Ltd.
    Senior Research Engineer
Hitachi America, Ltd. Apr 2013 - Apr 2015
    Santa Clara
I was the technical leader of the 3GPP 4G LTE standardization team in Hitachi America R&D Santa Clara. We actively contributed to several 3GPP RAN 1 SIs such as small cells and FD-MIMO, CoMP, FeICIC and TD-LTE. I expanded our work to the complete telco system (RAN 2, SA 1, 2) and joint application + EPC + RAN layer optimizations. I also worked in LTE prototyping with Amarisoft LTE base station and USRP based UE emulators. Our team developed an in-lab LTE emulation testbed and several use cases to showcase effect of traffic congestion prediction and optimization (video compression). (MWC 2015). I was the primary author of Heterogeneous Networks in LTE-Advanced book that was published by John Wiley on 2014. I co-authored tutorials on heterogeneous networks at IEEE VTC 2012 and WCNC 2013.
  • Hitachi America, Ltd.
    Research Engineer
Hitachi America, Ltd. Aug 2009 - Apr 2013
    Santa Clara, C A
I joined Hitachi America R&D in Santa Clara and worked on 4G LTE PHY and MAC research and 3GPP standardization. Developed system and link level simulators for the radio layer (RAN 1). Proposed and validated algorithms in SU/MU-MIMO, UE scheduling, DAS, interference management, modulation and coding, OFDM etc.
  • Winlab, Rutgers University
    Graduate Research Assistant
    Winlab, Rutgers University 2003 - 2009
I worked in a wide range of wireless communications and resource allocation issues. In my MS thesis, I derived optimal power allocation and coding strategies to maximize capacity of two-dimensional spreading schemes for a doubly-dispersive wireless channel. During PhD, I used microeconomics and pricing/game theory based approaches for dynamic spectrum allocation between multiple users and service providers under different scenarios of user (strategic, non-strategic) and operator motives.
  • Bell Labs Alcatel-Lucent
    Intern
    Bell Labs Alcatel-Lucent 2007 - 2008
I proposed and evaluated the performance of a new cyclic prefix based timing acquisition algorithm for non-contiguous OFDM transmission. This is relevant for cognitive radio networks where transmitting devices sense vacant spectrum and send data and there is no separate control channel by which the receiver can acquire the timing.
  • Qualcomm
    Intern
    Qualcomm Jun 2006 - Aug 2006
I studied the scenario of two UEs cooperating to transmit data a cellular environment both from a theoretical and 3GPP signaling perspective.
  • Iit Kharagpur
    Graduate Research Assistant
    Iit Kharagpur 2001 - 2002
    Kharagpur Area, India
I developed a Simulation Testbed to evaluate open loop power control algorithms for cellular CDMA. I also designed and implemented (ASIC) a digital baseband communications processor.
