    I started my career at NMSS in 1983 working in an entry level position in our Northern California chapter. Over the next 28 years I served as Executive Director in the Mid America Chapter in Kansas City, and then in a variety of management positions at our Denver Headquarters office. In 1994 I was promoted to Vice President of Field Operations and in 1999 that position was expanded to include oversight for all fund raising activities. In 2004 I was named, after a nationwide search conducted by Spencer Stuart, to the position of President and CEO. After retiring from that position in 2011 I was recruited by the Board of Blackbaud, Inc to join their board. Blackbaud is a publicly traded company which develops software and provides technical support to the non profit industry exclusively.

As President and CEO, it was my responsibility to communicate and engage with our tens of thousands of volunteers, while inspiring our 1200 employees. I served on the National Board of Directors as well as on the Board of the MS International Federation. Under my leadership, research efforts expanded to include the establishment of Fast Forward, research into childhood MS, and greater focus on primary progressive forms of the disease. We tackled difficult public issues like stem cell research, the Affordable Care Act, and increased NIH funding under my leadership.
