IOTS constitutes a joint effort from experts in oil spill preparedness and response, satellite remote sensing and ocean modelling delivering beyond-state-of-the-art Marine Pollution Geointelligence to support Oil & Gas Industry. As the Co-Founder and Director of the Numerical Modelling Department, is our responsability, to use state-of-the-art hydrodynamic and oil weathering models towards providing decisive answers in all spill conditions.

Development of an operational tool for oil spill forecast in the Algarve Coast.

Co-coordination of the modelling work package in the European funded project ARGOMARINE (Automatic Oil-Spill Recognition and Geopositioning integrated in a Marine Monitoring Network).

As a trainee in NOAA Coastal Services Center the main goal of the work was to support the environmental, social, and economic well-being of the coast by linking people, information, and technology.

Provide advice on the modelling and monitoring of coastal and estuarine processes, the majority of this concerned physical processes but also included elements of chemistry and ecology. Supporting other SEPA staff or parties external to SEPA with advice related with the application of science and mathematics to the disposal of waste in the Marine Environment. Provide assessments of modelling and monitoring reports submitted to SEPA in support of applications to discharge waste to the coastal and estuarine environment. The assessments focused on the scientific methods used, the key assumptions made and the risks, to the environment and SEPA, associated with any uncertainties. This task demanded attendance of key meetings and the presentation of scientific information to non-scientists. Provide modelling, monitoring and data analysis of coastal and estuarine processes in support of investigative or project work. To author reports and presentations on this work and contribute to practical recommendations for environmental protection and improvement. To plan, organise and deploy instrumentation to collect coastal and estuarine data in support of the tasks detailed above. To develop tools, methods and procedures in support of the tasks detailed above. This included: identifying opportunities to improve current SEPA documentation and commenting on draft SEPA documentation.

Maintain and improve five hydrodynamic and water quality models from several sites along the south Portuguese coast. Improve a oil spill weathering model from a Arctic Norwegian fjord (Kongsfjord, Svalbard). Publishing results.

Monitoring the water quality of 5 coastal systems subject to waste water discharge, through numerical modelling and sampling methodologies. This work was contracted by the regional water supplier Águas do Algarve.

In charge of testing the methodology used in the project EMIR (Enhanced organic carbon mineralization rates in permeable sandy sediments). Joint project between NIOZ (Netherlands Institute for Sea Research) Baltic Sea Research Institute-Waarnemunde Centro de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIMA -Portugal).
