Designed and tested new equipment to improve various experimental procedures in the regenerative medicine lab. Designed a chest tube to help prevent lung puncture in trauma patients with pneumothorax/haemothorax, in collaboration with a team of graduate students and clinicians from the Trauma, Acute & Critical Care Surgery Division at Duke Hospital.

• Developed a MatLab data analysis app to easily monitor subject performance in response to pain therapy, and identify trends in data collected from company sponsored studies (using MatLab app designer).• Prototyped a tool to assist physicians with lead extraction at the end of treatment period• Created a study guide to help site coordinators remember tasks during subject visits

Montreal, Canada

This three months research project in Professor Wiseman's Lab was funded by the GEPROM initiative. The project focused on investigating the oligomerization state of membrane proteins with fluorescence microscopy (TIRF) under various agonist / antagonist conditions . This involved transfecting cell cultures with fluorescent markers and then collecting images under the microscope. These images were analyzed with a MatLab algorithm that uses the intensity of the pixels to determine the dimerization states of the proteins (a technique known as SpIDA). The results of this project were presented at a student research symposium at the end of the summer.

Honduras

• Spent 4 weeks in the cloud forest (Cusuco National Park), helping biologists collect data for various research projects. Provided me with a solid grounding in various field research techniques (e.g. mist-netting, bird counts, transects, etc.)• Spent 2 weeks at the marine site (Utila island) assisting the ongoing research on sponges and octocorals. This involved identifying and recording different species of sponges present within quadrats as part of a scubadiving research project.
