Sitting on my desk is a telephone magically connected to a cloud-based brain that does everything a Fortune 500 company’s phone system does, yet at a fraction of the price of a traditional phone. A telephone that will change the way small-to-medium-sized businesses communicate, in a big way. After all, what has that old phone done for me or any business, other than ring for the last several decades? What if we offered a smart IP phone loaded with a wealth of applications for a simple price, phone included, bundled with features to inspire our customers’ satisfaction, in the way we are wowed by the smart mobile phones we carry with us every day? If you are reading this you are probably interested in our services. Welcome and “Say Hello” to TeliCall, your new telephone company. We’ve combined the very best ingredients – networks, phones, cloud-based applications and people, into a simple service, packed with wow.

Founder

Speedbeam

After a short retirement, I started an incubator to explore broadband for an opportunity to build an enterprise replicating CellCall’s successful multi-market, high recurring cash flow, SG&A model, but on a grander scale.Dwayne Burberry, ejecting from Arch Paging as CTO, joined the adventure and we started SpeedBeam a wireless broadband service. We certainly knew wireless and I happened to live on a farm with dial-up so it seemed to be a logical place to start. We grew SpeedBeam up to about 500 subscribers and made a run at 17 million pops of 2.5 spectrum, aka Clearwire, only to lose the deal and a monster return waiting for a VC fund to make a decision to be the capper on an existing syndication.Next we took a shot at the RUS broadband stimulus money, proposing a state wide network serving the un-served. It seemed like a no-brainer, profit minded altruism, and Kentucky was a poster child of the proposed target and wireless was a perfect way to put rural America on the grid. Despite what the President said and like the rest of the stimulus program, the funds were shoddily allocated and to anything other than last mile projects serving the grid-less – the program’s stated objective. Poof!! Along the way we were approached by a large, Kentucky based, bank services company, who was in the process of transforming their hodge-podge network of circuits to a metro Ethernet platform and wanted to know if we wanted to partner up and sell their excess network capacity. That’s when we got introduced to VoIP and SaaS applications. SpeedBeam was slow to scale and without licensed spectrum, wasn't going to meet my expectations; I sold the wireless broadband business and pivoted to voice. After a few years of tinkering with the model as we added customers and let the technology settle, I found what I was looking for – the epiphany. Cellcall

CellCall was a blast. It was said to be a crazy idea; that I could take two-way radio channels, modify them through an obscure FCC rule, build a six state 15 market network offering telephone service and compete against the big guys. Was it really that crazy to offer businesses something the big guys weren’t offering, like friendly, responsive customer service, a better price, and a phone that could do things theirs couldn’t do? As it turned out it wasn’t that crazy after all: CellCall, with $20 million invested, merged with Nextel which became Sprint and produced a 10 x VC rate-of-return.

Founder

Arcorp

Atlanta

I started ARCorp after the ill-fated Fraser Group SMR start-up to focus on the Spectrum side of the SMR business and it turned out to be a really nice company. I had a great life-style. Atlanta was a happening spot and I was making lots of money, but I wasn’t really making the world a better place. The idea of using SMR spectrum to compete against the duopoly cellular monsters “my way” was really what I wanted to do, so being young and fearless, I started CellCall.

The Fraser Group

Hilton Head Island

The Fraser Group, founded by Charles Fraser in the early 1980’s, displayed the innovation he showed in conceptualizing and development of Hilton Head Island, SC. Charles, as he was known to everyone, placed at the time an unheard of $5 million personal bet on seeding the start-up of 10 telecommunications businesses in areas evolving around the divestiture of AT&T and a progressive deregulation by the FCC.After weeks of daily persistence, Charles hired me as the firm’s grunt worker and soon undertook the task to act as my Zen Master teaching me the art of start-ups and funding. My primary start-up was a company that would use SMR spectrum to compete with Cellular telephones. We moved the business from Hilton Head to Atlanta to gain a little credibility only to almost immediately crash thanks to a larcenous CEO. A priceless two year mentored business education. Charles Fraser was an incredible entrepreneurial visionary. Some of his story can be found herehttp://hiltonheadmilliondollarhomes.com/sea-pines-charles-fraser-hilton-head-island.php

Sales Guy

Motorola

Charleston, South Carolina Area

With dual degrees in Economics and Agriculture my goal was to land a job in the commodity pits of the Chicago Board of Trade, but actual economics and timing put me in Charleston, SC selling two-way radios to SMB’s for Motorola. Funny how things turn out, because Motorola was rolling out a new two-way radio platform called SMR, which would later provide the foundation for ARCorp and CellCall, which I founded in 1985 and 1988 respectfully.
