I like to think of myself as a laboratory physicist who's laboratory opens to the sky. Some of my current objects of study are Jupiter's moon Io and the space around Jupiter dominated by its magnetic field (its magnetosphere), comets, and Mercury's extended atmosphere (yes, Mercury has an atmosphere!) With the help of a grant from the National Science Foundation, I have contracted a small observatory, the Io Input/Output facility (IoIO) that conducts observations on a nearly continuous basis. This work has born fruit with the discovery of a large volcanic event on Jupiter's moon, Io and the recording of the highest quality ground-based images of Mercury's sodium tail.
